PIRATE GOLD.
Hero is Captain Kid, or maybe it’s Sir Henry Morgan, directing the hiding of the chests of treasure which he has looted from the unfortunate vessels he has conquered. His men are carrying the heavy chests, full of gold and jewels, and are burying them under the eye of their dreaded chief. Judging from the racket the crew aboard the ship is making, the voyage mtist have been a highly successful one, with many galleons captured and their crews sent to Davy Jones’s locker. The disposal of the wealth offers a chance to make some tine puzzles. The captain himself declaims a spell-out square. Find che right letter and from it move one square in any direction as the Icing moves in chess, till you have spelled out what he is saying. Letters can be used more than once, but once started moves must be continuous. From the ship comes the chantey of rejoicing now that the dangerous cruise is over. The crew presents it in enigma form. The chantey contains 17 letters. Guess the words defined and place their letters at the numbers indicated. When completed, you will have the entire refrain. Thus if you should guess a word as FAT and the numbers given were 4-LV33, you would put F as the fourth letter, A as the fifteenth, and T as the thirty-third. On the scroll is a rebus, which describes the whole picture. The objects and symbols represent syllables of a phrase, and when pronounced in order will give the phrase. The hard-looking man helping to carry the chest remarks concerning its contents in amotber rebus.
