SHIRTS DISAPPEAR FROM MOTOR-CAR.

George David was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day with stealing three shirts valued at £2 Bs, the property of Cedric: Thomas Haberfield. Accused, who was represented by Mr Thomas, pleaded not guilty. Chief-Detiective Carroll said that Haberfield was a traveller for a city firm. He and a companion named Grenfell left their car in the street while they collected a parcel from Grenfell’s office. They were in the office on'y a short time, and on their return they found one of the parcels missing. Grenfell then said he remembered having seen near the car a man in a peculiar-coloured overcoat. The man and a companion were traced to the Occidental Hotel, where the parcel was recovered, but the men bolted. Witness and Grenfell came across them again in Madras Street, where one of the men (not the accused) kicked Grenfell in the stomach. Several days later accused was seen in the Square, wearing the peculiar-coloured overcoat. He denied knowledge of the offence. Cedric Thomas Haberfield stated that accused’s companion kicked Grenfell in the “small of the stomach,” but, he added, that did not come into the case. Mr Thomas: No. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. Mr Thomas said that. there was nothing to connect accused with the theft. Accused had met a man when he was on his way to the railway station. The man, who said he had a parcel from a car, asked him to go along to the Occidental Hotel for a drink. Defendant had not run away at any time, when accosted by Haberfield or the police. The case was dismissed.
