RACING AND TROTTING NOTES

RACING NOTES.

Nominations for the New Zealand Cup will be received by the Canterbury Jockey Club up till eight o’clock on Friday night.

Sir George Clifford contemplates racing some horses at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting next month. Full Feather will be a competitor in the Wanganui Guineas and the Eclipse Stakes, while Quarterdeck and Swoopalong will fulfil engagements in hack racer. At one was a regular spring trip for horses from the Chokebore Lodge stable, but it has been dropped lately, the last time Sir George was represented being four years ago, when Winning Hit ran third to Royal Divorce and Enthusiasm in the Eclipse Stakes.

J. M’Combe has Court jester moving along in useful tasks and it is probable the Comedy King four-year-old will be sent north to race at the Marton and Wanganui meetings.

Mr J. S. Barrett has arranged to have his two mares, Dame Straitlace (Kilbronev —Discipline) and Ma Mie (Martian— Kildee), mated with Shambles season. Dame Straitlace is in foal Arrowsmith, while Ma Mie has not been at the stud previously.

* * * * , , Mr G. L. Rutherword has purchased the steeplechaser Radiate and the Polvdamon gelding has joined D. Campbell’s stable at Riccarton.

Mr P. Delargey has purchased the ( hurdler Erin-Go-Bragh and the exWest Coaster will be trained by F. ana , A. Trilford at Washdvke. * * * * Some improvements are contemplated at the Ashburton racecourse. They will be gone on with after the spring meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club next month and the work . will be completed in time for the summer meeting, to be held early in Dc cember. a * * * The Hawk is booked for a race in a six furlongs handicap at the Hawke a Bay Hunt Club’s meeting on He is weighted at 11.12, with a 9.0 minimum, and he is not. harshly treated, if in anything like his best form. ♦ # * * Mr T. M. Samson’s Antrim Boy, a useful galloper on the flat, is to be tried as a hurdler. * * * * Tt is reported that Mr W. Quirk made an offer of 900 guineas for Potin before the Lincoln Steeplechase and probably he was fortunate that the deal was Mr J. R- M’Kenzie inspected a number of vearlings during his stay in England, and, though unable to remain for the Newmarket July sales, he was represented by a commissioner, who secured a colt for the New Zealand sportsman privately for 800 guineas. The voungster is by Ellangowan. a Lemberg horse who won the Two Thousand Guineas in 1923, his dam being bv Black Jester a Polymelus horse who won the St. Leger m 1914. Lemberg and Polymelus are both sons of Cvllene. * * * • Though Lochson will be a starter in the open sprint at the coming Taranaki Hunt Club meeting,.it is unlikely that he will be seen in ’Action' at the Marton or Wanganui meetings as his owner is desirous of giving him a chance of earning distinction over the big country later on. • * * * The Bisogne mare Avola has foaled a filly to Ruapapa. Avola was Bisogne’s first foal and she is the first mare to foal to Ruapapa. ♦ # * * There appears to be some confusion regarding the two-mile record for Australia and New Zealand. Two Australian mares, Tibbie and Canning Queen, are given the credit with 3min 22isec. When Star Stranger won the last Trentham Gold Cup from Satrap, he ran 3min 22isec, and this is the record. * * * ♦ One of the straight-out wagers on Ilynanna for the Caulfield Cup, for which he was solidly supported early this month, amounted to £6500. * • * * Good reports come from the north concerning Aussie. The Australian-bred gelding is said to be in good fettle, and ready for deeds to measure up well with those of his past. * * * * Mr W. 11. Gaisford stated after the Grand National meeting that he was sending Commendation to George Jones at Awapuni this week. The gelding had done plenty of work on the station, and his wind was good, in addition to being* comparatively well muscled up. The programme mapped out for him includes the Wellington and Riccarton spring meetings, and as a preliminary he may have a run at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on September 29, or Master ton meeting on October 13. Probably the Masterton meeting will see him open his five-year-old season.

The Koatanui stud master, Mr G. M. Currie, will hope that the ill-luck of his stud this season will not continue or spread to the racing stable. Pennon, clam of Motley, Lvsander, Damaris, and Ceremony, foaled on July 29, just three days too soon, and her foal will rank as a yearling. Then Mr Currie lost Cherry Mart and her colt foal by Limond. Cherry Mart was the dam of Mandane and Covent Garden. The next was the passing, not unexpected, of the Sundridge stallion Absurd, who was retired from active service last season. Among the foalings at the Koatanui Stud there is reported the arrival of a colt foal by Sutala from Adour, dam of Soliform and Salimar. Adour is one of Mr G. D. Greenwood’s mares, sent north to be mated with Limond.

Rouen is a notable entry for events to be decided at Dannevirke next week. He is now' eleven years old, and has not raced since he ran unplaced in the Canterbury Cup in November, 1923, followin*g on his success in the New Zealand Cup on the opening day. -. * * *•

Mr 11. A. Wolfe, formerly "Cardigan” of the Sydney ‘‘Referee,’ and later of the "Australasian,” has been appointed chairman of the Queensland Turf L-lub.s stipendiary stewards. He takes up his new position on September 1. In the opinion of at least one keen judge of the thoroughbred in the Old Country, the stallion High (by Gainsborough—Whitetor) is likely to prove one of the greatest prizes an Australian breeder has secured in the Old Country. High Art is referred to as “the stoutest-bred horse in the world.” High Art was purchased in England last month by Mr A. W. Thompson, owner of the Widden Stud, in New South Wales. TROTTING NOTES. Nominations for the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday, September 15, will close on Friday night. * * * *• Imprint did not return with Louisiana to Nelson after racing at Addington. The Denver Huon gelding has gone into J. Bryce’s stable to be prepared for the New Zealand Cup. Native Star - will in future be trained here and she will go into E. C. M’Dermott’s stable. Native Star was started only once at the recent meeting at Addington. * * * sfe The disappointing pacer Richore and the trotter Rosa Bell, went north with Mr J. R. Corrigan’s team on Monday night. The pacer and the trotter will in future be raced by the Taranaki sportsman. * * * * There were a fine lot of trotters racing at the recent meeting at Addington. First, of course, comes the Gisborne owned Peterwah, who is in a class by himself. He won the chief two mile event on the first day in record time He did not seem to relish the mud on the second day. although he has frequently performed well on heavy tracks. In the King George Handicap, however, he broke early and never properly settled down. In the National Cup he was always in the picture and threatened to give Peter Bingen a great fight in the straight. Unfortunately, Peterwah broke about a hundred yards from the winning post and settled his chance. Peterwah is the best trotter who has been imported from America; in fact, no horse from that country that has raced in the Dominion has covered two miles in 4min 23 4-ssec, the time that Peterwah registered in his winning effort at the recent meeting. * * * Swiftbine., was only started on the first day of the recent meeting. He was on his worst behaviour, so possibly F. G. Holmes thought it best not to persevere with him. Swiftbine was working well at Addington in training about a fortnight prior to the meeting, but later he developed a lot of his bad faults, so his showing in the Stewards’- Handicap w-as not altogether unexpected. Swiftbine has a lot of speed and wonderful stamina, but he . is very hard to get to his best and he cannot be classed as reliable. v 4> * * Nigh born trotted fairly well in his races at Addington, but he is not on the improve and he will be lucky to win a race. With so many young improving trotters coming forward at each meeting, performed horses who are not capable of improving considerably on their handicapped time have little chance of success now-a-days. * * * * The Nelson-owned trotter Louisiana showed some speed on the second day of the meeting, which gave her second place to Maxegin. In her other races 'she did not trot steadily. Louisiana seems to go best on a grass track. On both days when the track was good at Addington she broke up badly. 4c * * ♦ Cannonball is not yet at his best. He has hardly been in work long enough to be at his top speed. Wildwood Junr. horses require a lot of work and Cannonball should race better in November.

Sister Beatrice, although she did not win a race, trotted really well on the first day, when she finished second to Kempton and covered the two miles in 4min 28 4-ssec. She failed to stay in the Addington Handicap, stopping badly over the last quarter of a mile. The Taranaki owned mare is amongst the best now in commission.

Elzear went a fine race on the first day, but she did not appear again at the meeting. It was reported that she had not been doing well just prior to the meeting, so possibly one race was enough for her. Elzear finished third to Kempton and Sister Beatrice in the Stewards’ Handicap.

Young Blake was in his best form, and was just beaten by Bonny Spec in the Avon Handicap on the second day in the mud. There are not many trotters who can come the last quarter of a two-mile race with Young Blake, but Bonny Spec did it and finally lie at him on the post. Young Blake was giving the South Canterbury trained mare 60 yards.

Peter Swift trotted solidly in his races, but he is now on a mark from which he will have to show further improvement before success will come his way.

Money Spider was in his best form and showed up well in his races. He is a back marker, however, and finds it hard to succeed in trotters’ races. lie will probably do better when racing amongst the pacers.

The president referred to the improvements in view in the new stewards’ rooms and to the extra seating accommodation that would be provided. The last meeting, he said, was a record.

FAIRWAY IS A GOOD THREE-YEAR-OLD.

(Special to the "Star.”) LONDON, July 5.

When these notes appear in print the i Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park will , have been decided. Last year, you may ’j remember, the famous Coronach took x his second dose of medicine from Colorado in this race, and was thereafter , retired to the stud. There are no horses ; of the class of Colorado or Coronach in the race this year, albeit I suppose j J should be careful in saying this, in view of the entry of Book Law and ; of Fairway. When Book Law’ failed . so badly—and unexpectedly—behind : Apelle at Epsom during Derby week, ; her effort was a sorry one for a fillv with her splendid record. Subsequent ] examination by the "vet” disclosed the fact that her kidneys were out of or- , der, and this accounted for her moderate display; or at any rate was adjudged to have done so. Lord Astor's filly held a liability in the Ascot Gold Cup, but was not saddled, and, although we were told afterwards that she could have been produced fit and well if her connections had cared to take risks, I am wondering how she is going to shape in the coming race at Sandown. On last year’s form. of course, she would be a real good thing on weight-for-age terms with any three-year-old of the present season, but it must be rigidly borne in mind that there is now a doubt about her being able to reproduce last season’s form. An illness of the sort she has suffered must leave its mark. The opposition she will have to face at Sandown cannot be called formidable on "paper,” but at the same time there is Fairway. This colt could not have given anything like his best in the Derby, and, as I have said before, I am all for forgetting his inglorious effort on Epsom Downs, and giving him another chance at the very first opportunity. I. have no authentic information that Fairway will go to post for the Eclipse, and y et I hardly dare venture to think that he will not. The work he has done, and is doing, makes me feel sure that the Sandown race is the one in which he will be called upon to effect

his "come back.” and 1 opine that hi effort to repeat the success of his stable companion, Colorado, last year may be successful in every way. He " a ' among the best two-year-olds—if not actually the best —of his season, and his connections had tremendous confidence in him at Epsom. He failed, and at first it was not easy to find an excuse for his failure. But the Hon G. Lambton, who manages Lord Derby’s horses, has now cleared the air, and said that the colt was too much distressed by the mobbing he got before the Derby to be able to do himself justice. T feel absolutely confident that Fairwav is a good horse, and 1 can quote from my Newmarket friend his firsthand opinion of the horse recently sent to me. " Keep on telling all your friends and readers not to take any .notice of Fairway’s defeat in the Blue Riband. lie is a great colt, and bet ter than Toboggan or anything else »n F. Butters’s stable.” For this and other reasons, therefore, I am recommending him for the Eclipse. One of the rivals of Book Law and Fairway will be Royal Minstrel, the grey colt trained by Captain Bovd Rochfort that ran second in the 2000 Guineas and unplaced in the Derby. He has since won at Ascot, but I find it hard to believe that he will be suited by the Sandown course, or be able to cope with Fairway if the latter is at his best. I know that Roval Minstrel is a good colt, and that he will win races, but I should prefer it to be over a galloping mile at Newmarket, if I was recommending him with any degree of optimism. He is too big and “ lolloping ” for the Esher slopes. There is a race the day after the Eclipse called the Anniversary Cup. To me it looks a good thing for F. Darling’s Maid of Perth, after the way she ran at Ascot and the weight she has been given. All the same, ray friends tell me that the horse to win this “Anniversary” is*Appelle—an exItalian competitor that was successful in the same race last year.

The Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood is difficult to deal with before I can see the weights, but I am able to throw out a fairly reliable pointer in favour of Portland, a four-year-old that used to be trained in Ireland, but is now with Boyd Rochfort at Newmarket. It will be remembered that the horse ran second to Fohanaun in the Victoria Cup at Hurst Park in the spring. The only other horse that concerns me for the Goodwood sprint at this stage is Chichester Cross, whose impost I shall watch with interest.
