CANTERBURY CENTRE. The executive of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association met last night, Mr W. FJewel]yn presiding. Others present »'ere Messrs R.-Beattie. E. S. Harper, TV. A. Ford. E. Todd. A. L. Lewis; and G. G. Lockwood (hon secretary). Jt was decided to forward to J. TV. Savidan a -letter of congratulation upon bis winning the 10.000 metres cross-country championship of New Zealand. The president remarked that Savidan had won the one-mile and three-mile amateur championship of New Zealand, but had been beaten by R. A. Rose over the same distances for the Australasian championships. R. S. Manx, who came in second in tha Timaru to Christchurch road race in 1926, applied for reinstatement to amateurism. It was stated that he joined the Christchurch Club, but not knowing the difference between amateurs and professionals he rode in a professional race. He was informed immediately that he could not ride amateur, and so competed as a professional for a year and a half, winning about £3O, £27 of which came from a second in the. Timaru to Christchurch road race of 1926. The application, along with that of Cyril Rhodes, will be referred to the New* Zealand Council for favourable consideration. An application by the Papanui Amateur Sports Club, with a membership of £4 seniors and 21 juniors, for affiliation with the association will be forwarded to the New Zealand Council with a favourable recommendation. ‘ This Papanui Club appears to be a very live body,” remarked the president, in adding his vote in favour of the club’s application for a permit to hold a harriers race from Sumner to the Addington Show Grounds on September 29, to coincide w’ith the finish of the 100 miles round-the : gorge cycling road race. The amateur section of the programme for the Labour Day gala sports at Ashburton was approved. The Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club advised that the fifty miles New Zealand road cycle championship would be held in Wellington on Saturday, September 15. ' When Timaru can send up twelve men to run an amateur race here, it shows they have the true amateur spirit,” remarked the president, in reporting upon the recent cross-country championship of Canterbury.
