HARBOURING CHARGES HEARD IN COURT TO-DAY.

In the Magistrate’s Court this morning, five young men appeared to answer several charges concerned with the harbouring of the girls who had escaped from an institution at Burwood. Chief-Detective J. Carroll prosecuted, and Mr Sargent and Mr Tracy appeared on behalf of the accused. The accused were Ernest Crozier, David Crozier, Victor Robert Blackburn, James Hannan, George Quaid, Charles Timothy Rogal and Maurice Victor Rossiter. After Mr Sargent had addressed the Court on the question of what constituted a place of refuge, and what constituted an act of harbouring, Mr Lawry said that the main issue was the one of penalty. He would hold that harbouring hail been committed if gifts had been made to the escapees. Mr Sargent entered a formal plea of guilty to three of the four charges against Blackburn. Mr Tracy entered pleas of not guilty to the charges preferred against the Croziers. Mr Sargent pointed out that the e\ridence of the girls in the Supreme Court had been entirely unreliable. The Magistrate said that he would consider the charges severally, and would hear further evidence. The eases were adjourned until this afternoon.
