DELAY NOT DUE TO AUDIT OFFICER.

REPLY IS GIVEN TO RICCARTON INQUIRY. Mr T. M. Ford, a Riccarton borough councillor, wrote to the Auditor-Gen-eral stating that he had repeatedly asked for the council’s balance-sheets for the last three years, but they had not been available. He had been informed that the Audit Department was at fault. The following reply was received from the Controller and Auditor-Gen-eral (Mr G. F. C. Campbell):— “ I have to inform you that the Audit Inspector reports that he made • a partial audit to March 31, 1927, but I was unable to complete owing to the • fact that neither of the electricity registers was balanced, nor were the trading accounts prepared. • “ Quite recently the clerk wrote to [ the inspector stating that the accounts [ were then ready for audit to March ! 31, 1928. In an interview with the ’ Mayor he informed the inspector that ’ instructions had been given to the ' clerk to prepare the accounts, but as stated above, they have only recently been completed. The inspector expects ; to have the audit completed in about a [ fortnight’s time. “From a perusal of this report it is apparent that the responsibility for the delay does not rest with the Audit Office or the inspector.”
