“ WAS HOME IN MY OLD HOUSE.”

DEFENDANT PLEADS SUCCESSFUL ALIBI.

Charles Taylor was charged this morning, before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., with taking trout other than with rod and line on May 19. He pleaded, not guilty. Mr Gresson prosecuted-on the Acclimatisation Society. Ranger Burman said that on the date mentioned he found the defend ant with a spear, a torch and a bag full of fish. “Never on your life,” said defend ant. “I wasn t there. I was home in my old house, never left it. That was on the Saturday,” said defendant. To Mr Gresson: I was home all afternoon, and was never out of the house all evening. Two friends came and played euchre till 11.45 p.m. “Then it was only an accident that the ranger came to your house?” “Well, he came. He said something about ‘up yonder.’ which I didn’t fol low. Then the wife came and she got from him that he was accusing me of poaching trout.” William Avis, in evidence, said that he had been “going with” defendant’s daughter. “I was round there playing cards.” “What date?” “I don’t know. I had a row with the girl about three months ago, ant haven’t been there since." Mr Gresson pointed out that the. of fence was alleged to have been com mitted within three months. Witness could not make a specifit statement about dates. Mrs Taylor, defendant’s wife, saic' that her husband did not go out at al on the afternoon and evening in ques tion. The charge was dismissed.
