S. C. RODGERS SENTENCED TO 12 MONTHS’ GAOL

Described as a systematic fowl stealer, Samuel Crawford Rodgers, a labourer, aged forty-nine years, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., this morning. Accused pleaded guilty to four charges of thett of fowls.

The charges concerned the theft of 44 fowls of a total value of £l3 10s. “Rodgers has been systematically going about at night stealing fowls, which he sells at the market," said Chief-Detective Carroll. “It seems to bo his particular hobby, and he has four previous convictions.”

“Since his release from gaol two months ago he has had to support his widowed sister and daughter, aged 17 years,” said Mr Bowie, who appeared for accused. “He has been promised a job by Mr 11. T. Armstrong, M.P., and intends to go straight in the future.”

On the first charge, Rodgers was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour. A similar sentence, to be cumulative, was imposed on the second charge. On the third and fourth charges accused was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
