At the meeting of the City Council last night a deputation from the Papanui Progress League asked the council to purchase, at a cost of £2OO, a section hacking on to the new reserve in St James Avenue, so that in time to come, when Papanui was more densely settled, a road may be formed to connect Windermere Road with St James Avenue. The deputation was supported by a petition signed by seventyseven residents of the neighbourhood, Councillor F. R. Cooke introduced the deputation. Mr J. Sturrock said that the deputation was asking the council to purchase the section so as to provide a direct entrance to St James Park. Mr 11. Tillman also spoke. In reply to a question, Mr Sturrock said that there would be no immediate pressure on the council to form the road, provided they purchased the section. The council decided to refer the matte’* to the Finance Committee for consideration, on the understanding that they should first consult the other committees interested before presenting their report. There were murmurs of surprise when, instead of the Mayor, the Deputy-Mayor, Councillor D. G. Sullivan. M.P., was announced by the Town Terk at the commencement of last light’s meeting of the City Council. On taking the chair the Deputy-Mayor stated that the Mayor had been delayed a few minutes owing to some slight accident to his motor-car. The explanation was received with smiles. A quarter of an hour later the Mayor arrived and relieved the Deputy-Mayor, of the duties of chairman.
