Edward Tarlington Horne. aged forty-three, pastrycook, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, after pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court this morning to two charges of theft. Mr Bowie appeared for Horne. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., presided.
The charges were of theft from William Brittenden and Son. warehouse agents, on July 30, and of theft from John Pegley. bootmaker, 125, Manchester Street, on August 2. Doreen Brittenden, employed in her father’s warehouse, said that she was in charge of the warehouse during her father's absence in July. On the morning following July 30 she found several wax matches inside the office. The doors were locked, but a piece of wood was broken from one of the doors. Goods to the value of £65 were stolen, and she had since identified those goods at the police station. Accused occupied a small shop downstairs in the same building. Detective Thompson read a statement by accused admitting the theft. The greater portion of the goods had been recovered at accused's shop, and the remainder had been found at his residence.
“Do you know anything of this man?" asked Mr Bowie.
The Chief-Detective produced a very lengthy list. John James Pegley, in charge of a boot-store at 125, Manchester Street, said that on August 2 he found that his shop had been entered. Boots were strewn all round the floor, and goods to the value of £8 15s, and a suitcase containing £l6 in gold, left in his charge for the evening, were missing.
