DISPOSAL OF CHESTER STREET FIRE STATION DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL.
The question of the use of the site of the old Fire Brigade Station in Chester Street was raised at last night's meeting of the City Council, when a letter was read from Mr R B. Owen stating that on several occasions over a period of years requests had been made to clear the old Fire Brigade buildings oil the river bank and that the reserve should be thrown open for the free use and enjoyment of the public for all time. He drew attention So the fact that by the generosity of Mr T. J. Edmonds. this area would shortly become the principal band and music site of the Htv when greater demands would £ made upon every of reserve, lie stated that the buildings were a great eyesore and that as long ago as 1922 when the council gave up possession of the stables and stores a definite promise was given that the council would vacate the whole of the remaining buildings as soon as the new council premises in Moorhouse Avenue were completed, but the building was still used bv the Reserves Department and the yard used as a dump. He urged tho council to give immediate effect to their obligations under the trust imposed upon them by the Christ-
