MIDDLE-WEIGHT BOXERS STAGE GOOD BOUT.

M’DONALD BEATS M’INNES ON POINTS.

(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, August 21. The middle-weight contest between Tommy M’lnnes, list 21b (Scotland) and Lachie M’Donald, list 41b (Timaru), held under the auspices of the Northern Boxing Association last night, resulted in a win for the latter on points. The fight, which was for a purse of £2OO, went the full fifteen rounds and attracted a record attendance. Both contestants appeared to be in fine condition.

It was a willing fight throughout, and the decision in M’Donald's favour was a good one, and met with the approval of the spectators.

M’Donald started with a right to the head. M’lnnes came back with a right cross to the body. A right cross from M’Donald to the body was followed by a hard right to the head. M’lnnes bored in, swinging a wild left, which just missed. M’Donald was crowding M’lnnes to the ropes, and the latter was'warned for holding. It was M’Donald’s round.

M’lnnes was showing to better advantage by using hard right jabs to the jaw. A right from M'lnnes to the head followed a right return from M’Donald. A good return from M’lnnes and a hard right to the body from M’Donald made the round even. M’Donald was now bleeding freely from the left eye.

The third round saw M’lnnes missing badly, whereas M’Donald was taking matters fairly easy and landing some nice rights to the body. He had M’lnnes clearly worried.

A hard right cross, followed by a good left to the body from M’Donald, opened the fourth round. M'lnnes was still missing. A hard right cross to the head from M’lnnes just missed the point. M’lnnes was told to break, but fought on, while M’Donald fought back. M’Donald again took the round. The fifth round saw a great rally by both fighters. M’Donald's eye was still bleeding, and causing him considerable inconvenience. A right to the jaw with a left to the head from M’Donald caused M’lnnes to back to the ropes. Both hit at each other with lefts and rights to the body and head, M’Donald having slightly the better of the exchanges. M’lnnes followed a breakaway with a left swing to the head, but M’Donald still continued to lead. The sixth and seventh rounds saw some good fighting which was well appreciated by the crowd. M’Donald was rather wild in some of his swings, but landed more often, and could be given both rounds.

The eighth was a great round, M’lnnes coming out- from his corner in a determined effort to make up lost ground. A stand-up exchange of hard punches saw M’Donald slightly the better. Quick returns were the order of the round. A right cross from M’Donald sent M’lnnes to the ropes, where he fought his way out with hard right jabs to the jaw. Both fighters appeared to be tiring. M’Donald’s eye was bleeding through every round. The tenth round saw M’Donald timing his blows badly, but landing as often as his opponent. The round was

In the eleventh and twelfth rounds M’lnnes landed some good punches to the body and head. M’Donald was very dull throughout, and both rounds went to M’lnnes. From this stage to the end M'lnnes did all he could to knock out M’Donald, but, although loss of blood was weakening M’Donald he fought back gamely and gained a well-earned decision. Jim Broadfoot, Auckland’s champion, challenged the winner of the contest. Charlie Purdy was introduced to the audience before the big bout.

The association decided to send a cablegram to Monson, middle-weight champion of Australia, to ask him to visit. Auckland. Should Monson accept he will be matched with either M’lnnes or M’Donald.
