MR H. BRINKMAN, HANDICAPPER, DIES.

DID MUCH FOR SPORT IN EARLY DAYS. The death of Mr Henry Brinkman, a well-known trotting handicapper, at his residence, Ilackthorne Road, todav. leaves a place in trotting it will be’difficult to fill. He was associated with trotting in New Zealand from its earliest days, did a great deal to promote trotting then, and was the bestknown trotting handicapper in the Dominion. lie was an official and steward in the early days, and relinquished Jus business as a butcher in Sydenham to devote himself completely to handicapping, discharging his duties up to the last, having completed the handicaps for the Otago Hunt Club's meeting soon before his death. He handicapped for the majority of the clubs in the South Island and, recently, for Wellington. Ilis experience was invaluable, and his work throughout was characterised by fairness and cod* scienticusness. lie was sixtv-eight years of age. He was married twice. lie leaves a widow and three sons, Messrs Leonard, Harold and Oliver Brinkman. Mr Brinkman was born in Victoria and conducted a butchery business in Christchurch for a number of years, retiring some years ago. He had been associated with trotting since its very early days and was first of all an owner, then a member of the handicapping committee of a Christchurch Club, and for a number of years past had been the leading handicapper of the Dominion, acting fo£ the Metropolitan. New Brighton, Dunedin, Ashburton, Timaru Oamaru, Wellington, and some West Coast Clubs. He was also handicapper for some racing clubs which have trotting events on their programmes. He was a careful student of trotting form and was conscientious in his work. Hie death will be much regretted by a large circle of friends.
