DEPOTS RELIEVE CASES OF HARDSHIP.

PRACTICAL SYMPATHY SHOWN BY THE PUBLIC

Gases of acute’ distress due to unemployment are still coming under the notice of the ladies who are engaged In the work of conducting the relief depots in the city. During the past few days, there has been a lull in the number of cases dealt with, but the indications are that the falling-6ff is. temporary only, .and is accounted for by the fact .that a certain amount of casual empio3 r ment has been available in connection with the Winter Show and the races. . The experience at the central depot in Bedford Row is that the great majority of the men are very keen to get and they only call for rations and., clothing as a last resort. This morning a case came under the notice of the depot workers, in which there are five children, ranging in age from one vejar to eight and a half, and the father has - been out of work for five weeks. There are also many cases of sickness in the homes of the unemployed. With Very few exceptions, the men who are helped show a great willingness to do a day’s work in the Christchurch Domains in return for the value of the rations received. As one man stated this morning, there was little satisfaction in receiving the goods for nothing, and, as he could not get steadv work, he was glad of the. opportunity of doing something in the Domains. In response to the appeals lor donations, some very welcome gifts have been sent to the depots during the past few days, and supplies are now coming in very well. An anonymous donor in Greymouth has forwarded a sack of clothing and boots, including some new articles, and seven parcels have been sent in from Waikari. The manner in which gifts are now coming to hand is an indication that .the public generally is thoroughly appreciative of the efforts of the depot workers to relieve distres.s. A quantity of fresh vegetables was also received this morning, but cash donations are not very numerous. So far, the depots have not been in the position of receiving more goods than they can make use of. All classes of foodstuffs are always welcome, and nothing is ever wasted. Yesterday Mr A. K. Anderson, head master of St Andrew's College, called at the central depot and inquired as to the methods adopted in relieving distress. He promised to send.in a donation of £lO ail'd to make an appeal through the boys at the college for special donations. THE REGISTRATIONS. Twenty-four unemployment registrations were received at the Government Labour Bureau this morning, nineteen of the men being married. Fifteen men were selected for City Council relief works and six for work on the IlapukaClarence Road under the Public Works Department. FORESTRY OPERATIONS. Mr W. G. Morrison, Conservator of State Forests for the Canterbury-Otago region, .stated this morning that there were now over 100 mert engaged in planting operations at the new Eyrewell Plantation near Horrellville, and the work for the present season was now in full swing. Within the next two or three months it was hoped to plant about 4000 acres if the weather conditions were favourable. The full complement of men was now engaged. In addition to the men working at the Eyrewell Plantation there were about 110 men employed at the Balmoral Plantation, but at Ilanmer only about a dozen men wero working. LIST OF SUBSCRIPTIONS.
