THE RUGBY GAME. CANTERBURY UNION EXECUTIVE MEETS. The executive of the Canterbury Rugby Union met last evening; present —Messrs A. E. M’Fhail (chairman), A. Barrett, E. V. Phillips, A. Duggan, W. Maxwell, W. Britten, St J. J. Dunne, A. E. Flower, C. S. M’Cully. R. H. North, W. Thompson, J. K. Moloney and W. Britton. Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., asked the permission of the union to play the annual match with Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., at Lancaster Park on July 23. Application had been made to the Lancaster Park Board for the use of the oval. The permission was granted subject to the ground being in order. The Ellesmere Sub-Union wrote asking for a grant to assist in fostering the game in the schools by providing each of the teams competing in the competition with a ball. It was decided to grant the request. USE OF GYMNASIUM. An offer was received of the Canterbury College Students' Association gymnasium on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 for training purposes. The offer was accepted with thanks. RANFURLY SHIELD GAMES. The South Canterbury Rugby Union advised confirmation of the Ranfurly Shield match against Canterbury, set down for decision at Lancaster Park on July 14. The Manawatu-Horowhenua Union wrote advising that it was the wish of Manawhenua that the match on August 11 be set down as a Ranfurly Shield game. The writers asked Canterbury’s confirmation of the challenge. The confirmation was agreed 1 to. The New Zealand Union wrote confirming July 14 and July 18 respectively as the dates for the Ranfurly Shield matches against South Canterbury and The Cheviot Club wrote asking whether it would be possible to arrange a visit to Cheviot on Saturday, July 7, of either a senior A or a senior B side. Owing to sub-union fixtures and the North and South Sub-Union match the Cheviot senior team would be standing down for three Saturdays, and it would be pleased to have a game of some sort on the date mentioned. It was decided to forward the letter to Training College senior B side, asking whether they would care to make the trip. AGREEMENT WITH REFEREES. The secretary of the Referees’ Association wrote to the union as follows: "In reply to your letter with reference to the question of cautions, I am directed by my association to inform you that the matter was discussed fully at a meeting and the position so far as the referees are concerned was explained to Mr W. Britten, who offered to submit a report to your union. I am further directed to inform you that my association would be obliged if in future cases where an Implication is made against a referee, the name of the referee concerned should be mentioned." Mr Britten stated that an amicable arrangement had been come to regarding the cautioning of players. He thought everything would be all right in the future. The letter was received and the report was considered quite satisfactory. SCHOOL ANNUAL MATCHES. A letter was received from the Christchurch Boys* High School stating that the annual match between Waitaki and Christchurch Boys’ High Schools had been arranged for Wednesday, July 25. The writer suggested that the game should be played at Lancaster Park oval and that the union should take control. The application was granted, subject to the approval of the Board of Control. The Boys’ High School sports master wrote that the annual match between Boys’ High School and Christ’s College would be played on Wednesday, July 4, at the High School ground, Straven Road. An invitation was extended to the union executive to attend. The letter was received. SUB-UNIONS MATCH. The Northern y. Southern SubUnions match was set down for the oval at Lancaster Park on Saturday at I. p.m. Mr J. Mackle, of Kaikoura, was appointed referee. FOOTBALL BROADCASTS. On the motion of Mr Barrett, the action of the president, Mr S. F. Wilson, in stopping the broadcasting of Saturday’s Rugby was approved. Mr Duggan: I don’t think that it matters one bit to our gate whether the matches are broadcast or not. There were a number of people who were very disappointed, one of them being Jim Turpin, a leading player. Mr M’Cully: We had a record gate on Saturday. Mr Duggan: Mr Chairman, what answer would you give me if I asked you why the game was not broadcast on Saturday ? Mr Moloney: Search me! The chairman: Well, gentlemen, the position is purely experimental. It was decided to leave the postponement of broadcasting in the hands of a committee comprising Messrs Wilson, Moloney and Flower. The first inter-sub-union match of the season was held at Akaroa on Saturday, wnen Ellesmere beat Peninsula by S points to 3 alter an interesting game. The combination of the Ellesmere backs and forwards was superior to that of Peninsula, although the latter threw the ball about well, in spite of the greasy conditions. The visitors were the superior team on the day’s play. For Ellesmere, •A. Newman placed a penalty goal and converted a try scored by R. Rich, and for Peninsula Robinson kicked a penalty goal. Mr A. Radford (Little River) acted as referee. After t,he match the Peninsula SubUnion entertained the Peninsula and Ellesmere teams at dinner at the Bruce Hotel. Mr J. o. An application from the South Canterbury Association for a return match' with Canterbury on July 3 3 was referred to the Match Committee. An application from two newspaper teams for the use of English Park on Tuesday was granted. The Match Committee reported that, acting on the suggestion of the association, it had arranged another round In the Senior B competition. The secretary was instructed to write the New Zealand Football Association protesting against the Chatham Cup final being arranged for a North Island venue. It was also decided to apply for the reinstatement of Ashburton in the Canterbury Football Association’s boundaries. The offer of Mr G.
