PUBLISHED LIST OF TROT ACCEPTANCES.
DUNEDIN MAN APPEARS ON UNUSUAL CHARGE. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 21. In the Police Court, Francis Joseph Haywood pleaded not guilty to publishing a document purporting to be a programme of trotting events at Forbury Park. There was an alternative charge of circulating a document. The publication was the “ Sporting Guide,” with a list of acceptors for the first day. Chief-Detective Cameron stated that the acceptances were given to the newspapers with permission to distribute to Press Association members, and defendant no right to copy and publish them. It was claimed that this caused a drop of 739 in the sale of the official books at the meeting. The chief-detective handed in an Auckland publication, the publisher of which had been prosecuted and convicted. Mr White, for the defence, "stated that the Auckland publication definitely stated it was a programme, but the “Sporting Guide ” did not. People bought it as an indication of turf form. The Magistrate, in reserving judgment, stated that at present he did not think the publication purported to be a programme.
