Victor Bingen was a warm favourite for the Innovation Handicap, but was badly placed at the barrier, and never emerged from the ruck. Nelson’s Prince was soon in front, followed by Lonesome and Leo Bellman. This order was never changed. Lonesome was making a great fight when she broke a few strides from the post, Nelson’s Prince beating her by a length and a half. Leo Bellman, eight lengths away, stalled off Jade's late challenge by a neck.

Return Voyage was slightly better backed than Danny Boy for the Advance handicap, and both were prominent all the way. Return Voyage and Grand Light were in front from the start, but were soon joined by Becky Mine, with Madam Locanda, Tiny Bingen, No .Fear and Danny Boy handy. Becky Mine was done three iurlongs from home. Return Voyage had a slight advantage at the entrance to the. straight, and beat Grand Light by a length, with Madam Locanda half a length away. Tiny Bingen and Danny Boy were close up. The winner b a three-year-old by Happy Voyage and is trained by J. Henderson, of Oamaru.

Nantwich carried a few pounds more than Jolly Pet in the President’s Handicap. with Shad6wland, Great Actress and Genuine also well backed. Great Actress and Dillon Gold made the early running, with Brentloc soon third, while Desert Star, Lenamhor. Nantwich and Honour Bright were handy. Great Actress broke leaving the straight with s round to go. causing trouble to several others. Jolly Pet was prominent at this stage, and be went to the front three furlongs from home. Honour Bright and Jackie Audubon headed the others at the home turn, but Shadowland ran past in the straight, finishing three lengths behind Jolly Pet. who won easily. Lenamhor was a length away, beating Jackie Audubon by a neck, with Bing Boy and Honour Bright next. Clarke had a lucky escape from trouble with Jolly Pet when Great Actress broke. For the Papakaio Handicap John Dee carried one ticket more than Listen In. The latter and Pere Pointer led for half the journey, when Listen In drew clear, with Arikitoa, John Dee and Forward Maid handy. John Dee took charge three furlongs from home, where Nihilist Junior was closing fast. These two led to the straight, John Dee winning easily by a length. Florrie Pointer finished on well, a length away, beating Free Pointer by half a length. The winner and the second horse both hail fr6m Southland. The Southland mare Kerrwood Bell, now in T. Wallis’s Washdyke stable, was a good favourite for the Waikaura Handicap, with Repute as second choice. Repute never showed up. Atidalie made the early running, with Jade. Wattle Patch, Toheroa and Commander Bingen handy, while Trampcrisp, Kerrwood Bell and Avalanche were not far away at the end of a mile and a half. A mile from home Commander Bingen was just clear of Trampcrisp, Kerrwood Bell and Avalanche. A little further on Trampcrisp broke. - Then Kerrwood Bell took charge and won easily by three lengths from Avalanche, who beat Trampcrisp by a similar margin, with Commander Bingen, Jade and Audalie close up. The winner was always going well. Dundas Boy was favourite for the Enfield Handicap, while the others backed were Arran Chief and White Sun. The last-named is in Tompkinson’s stable. The favourite and White Sun were very slow to begin and were never near the front. Glen Farg made the early running. but Arran Chief was in front at the end of three furlongs, with Four Bells and Locanda, General next. Harry Audubon was handj*. Three furlongs from home Harry Audubon took second place and heading Arran Chief in the straight won easily by a

length. Locanda General was a length with away, with Glen Farg close up. * Harry Audubon, who is now raced by C. S. Donald, paced in his best style and broke a long run of failures. Nan Brent and Great Triumph disputed favouritism for the Stewards' Handicap. Milo Minto was in front at the end of a furlong, but Needles headed him a little further on. These two were still in charge after going seven furlongs, with Nan Brent, John Appear and Great Triumph handy. Kinney Dillon then moved up, and three furlongs from home she and Nan Brent ran to the front, leading Great Triumph

to the straight. Rose Marie came fast with a rattle, and won by two lengths, Nan Brent beating Great Triumph by a neck, with Kinney Dillon close up. WANGANUI RACES. Per Press Association. The winter meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club was concluded to-day in beautiful weather. There was a good attendance. The course was in good order. All paraded for the Rata Hack Hurdles and Mister Gamp was first choice, carrying about £SO more than Troilus, while Peneus was next in request. From a straggling start Glen gariff, Hymestrason and Rafa were first to show out, but before the stands were reached Hymestrason had taken command from Rafa, Whisogne, Peneus Ballyfarnon, Glengariff, Peshwa, Troilus and Mister Gamp, Shining Armour having stopped at the second hurdle. Along the back Whisogne and Peneus headed Hymestrason with Ballyfarnon Peshwa, Troilus and Our Jack next. However. Hymestrason ran to the front again before the top was reached and led into the straight from Whi sogne, Glengariff, Peneus, Troilus and Mister Gamp, who was coming fast Hymestrason held off Mister Gamp tc win by two lengths. Glengariff was a head away third, with Ballyfarnon Troilus, Peneus, Whisogne, Peshwa Our Jack and Rafa next. Bisox was first fancy for the Balgownie Hack Handicap, for which al smarted, but he only carried about £IOC more than Avro, with Kawahakim next best backed. From a good start Resinous led along the straight fromSome Lad, Royal Acre, Freezeout Royal Elm, Gasnapper, with Kawahakina last. Along the back. Some Lad and Resinous were together, with Roya Acre, Freezeout, Royal Elm, Bisox, Ga: napper, Avro. and King Mart next. Cas itapper took charge crossing the top and was first to turn for home from King Mart, Bisox, Flying Shot, Avro, Roya Acre and Some Lad. Bisox then came through and went on to score easily by three lengths from Avro, who bea< Gasnapper by a length and a half. King Mart, Flying Shot, Freezeout, Kawa hakina, Royal Acre, Some Lad and Royal Elm followed as named.

Troilus was the only defection from the Century Hurdle race, leaving a field of eight. Aberfeldy was favourite, being entrusted with £174 more than Pouri, with Red Fuchsia and Perle de Leon next best backed. Red Fuchsia led along the straight from Aberfeldy. Perle de Leon, Vexatious, Pouri, Braeman, Matu and Euchre. Along the back, Aberfeldy ran to the front but was soon joined by Perle de Leon, the pair being well clear of Red Fuchsia Matu and Pouri. Passing the stands the last time. Aberfeldy was in front from Perle de Leon. Red Fuchsia. Vexatious, Pouri, Matu, and Braeman Along the back, the order was much the same. Crossing the top, Red Fuchsia, Aberfeldy and Perle de Leon were racing together with Pouri and Vexatious and Matu next. Perle de Leon and Red Fuchsia turned for home together with Pouri, Aberfeldy and Braeman next. In a great finish, Red Fuchsia beat Perle de Leon by a head, with Pouri three lengths away third. Braeman, Aberfedly, Matu and Vexa tious followed.

Tuki was withdrawn from the Grandstand Steeplechase and the public went for Puwhero, entrusting him with about £2OO more than Peter Maxwell, with Maunga and Mixed Heather best supported of the others. When thev reached the stands for the first tii -f\e, Puwhero was in front, with Peter Maxwell, Royal Heather, Mixed Heather, Passin’ Through, Polyphemus, Maunga and Sonomme next. Puwhero held his position as they crossed the stands double for the second time from Mixed Heather, Peter Maxwell, Maunga, Passin’ Through, Sonomme and Risk. Polyphemus having fallen at the first fence of the double. Maunga was nearly. down at the fence going out of the straight. Along the back the order was Puwhero, Miked Heather, Maunga, Peter Maxwell, Passin’ Through and Sonomme. Puwhero was first into the straight from Mixed Heather, Sonomme.j Maunga, Peter Maxwell and Passin’ Through, and went on to win hy a length from Mixed Heather, who beat Sonomme by three lengths. Maunga, Passin’ Through, Royal Heather and Risk were next, Peter Maxwell

having broken down after getting over the last fence. Brigadier Bill, who won the Wanganui Steeplechase, has been raised 101 b for the Great Northern Steeples, making his weight 10.8. Royal Damon and Horomea were withdrawn from the Empire Handicap. Glenross was favourite, carrying over £320 more than Paitonu. with Blimp and Day Guard next fancied. Day Guard led along the straight from Lin Arlington, Paitonu, Bonogne, Glenross. mont and Captain Gazeley. Across the back Day Guard was attended by Lin Arlington, Bonogne, Partaga, Beaumonth and Captain Gazeley. Across the top Day Guard was joined by Bonogne, with Lin Arlington, Blimp, Captain Gazeley, Beaumont, Partaga and Paitonu following. Bonogne was first to turn for home from Paitonu, Day Guard, Captain Gazeley, Glenross and Beaumont. Paitonu then took charge and was taking things easily when Day Guard came with a great run, and just failed to reach Paitonu by half a head. Barry, nearly handed the race away. Bonogne was a length further back third, with Beaumont, Glenross, Black Mint, Captain Gazeley, Blimp and Lin Arlington next. The eight carded for the Farewell Handicap all saddled up, and Callanmore was first choice, but he only carried fifty tickets more than Keddar, with Fee Simple next best supported. Callanmore and Chelone made the running along the back, from Eka, Fee Simple, Keddar and Rangiutu. There was no change as they crossed the top. Entering the straight, Chelone, Keddar and Callanmore were together, with Fee Simple and. Eka next. Keddar then drew out to win by two lengths from Callanmore, who beat Chelone by a nose. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES (Special t.o the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, May 19. The weather was favourable for training operations at Ellerslie this morning. Trainers had the use of the No. 3 grass track, which was on the heavy side, owing to a recent rain. The hurdles were erected on the outside of the course proper, while the steeplechase course, including the Hill, was also available. On No. 3 grass Royal Tea was first to work and sprinted half a mile in 53 2-ssec. Prince Papa Was sent a furlong further and registered lmin I2sec lor the journey, without being bustled. Ballymoy 11. and Hyde Park finished on terms at the end of five furlongs, which they traversed in lmin 7sec. Both these horses went well. Sir Archie (Ben Deeley) and Lonjint (Akerstein) were companions in a sixfurlong gallop, and after racing together throughout were on terms at the finish, although Sir Archie, who had the inside running, appeared to be doing the bettetr. Modest Boy was not doing his best in a run home from the six-furlong post in lmin 24 2-ssec. Princess Ronnie was sent over six furlongs alone and, going very evenly throughout, she completed the task in lmin 20sCc. Storm Fiend, Master Doon and Beau Cavalier jumped away'at the six-fur-long post and finished in the order named at the completion of the gallop, which occupied lmin 20 2-ssec.

Karamu traversed a round in lmin 49 3-ssec. Miss Myrtle and Lido finished on terms at the end of a half-mile sprint in 53 I^ssec.

Rotor finished better than Battle Colours at the end of a strong gallop over nine furlongs, the concluding six jeing covered in lmin 18 4-ssec.
