LATE WIRELESS

(By “ AERIAL ) Thunderous bursts of static at short intervals greeted attempts to tune in all Australian stations last night. Even with the aerial switched off the atmospheric ’ disturbance made itself audible. Using one stage of audio only, and with the aerial switch off, very great volume was heard, occasionally, lrom 2FC Sydney. This was particularly so at 10.40 during a bass solo. Unless that southerly materialises to-night the outlook for good reception to-morrow is not too favourable. An Appreciation. Writing on May 17. a correspondent states:—“l. was more than pleased to see in to-night’s ‘Star’ that the 'Roarer* had been located at last, and just where I thought (Dr Thacker’s), the place I mentioned to you in my letter about three or four weeks ago Well, I hope the credit of finding the nuisance has been given to your good self, for if anybody deserves it you do. for the keenness you have shown in the helping of others who are less fortunate than yourself in the knowledge of radio. Many a hint yours truly has picked up through your notes in the ‘Star/ May you continue with the good work ” The bouquets are appreciated, but it should be remembered that the. Radio Inspector (Mr Head) and Messrs Bingham and Blogg have also been engaged in the search for many weeks, and to them is the credit due for actually* proving, beyond doubt, the location of the disturbance. It is also to be mentioned that many letters have been received suggesting, in addition to the actual location, several others in that district as suspected of harbouring the intereierencemaker. Many experiments have been carried out, by the writer and others, to track the noise to its source, but owing to several circumstances all these failed until last Wednesday night's attempt. It should also be noted that it would not have been fair to have published the letters from correspondents as to the suspected source of the noise until tests had been carried out and proof obtained. Two Japanese Heard. W.J.G., Beckenham writes:—At midnight last night I found two Japanese stations JOCIC and JQAK rocking in. JQAK, on 390 metre?, transmits from Dairen, Kwantung, China, with 5000 watts power. The station, which is controlled by the Government Bureau of Communications, came in with a thump, and was as loud as 3AR ‘Melbourne) at its best. JOCK, on 360 metres, which transmits with a power of 1000 watts lrom Osaka, Japan, was also exceptionally loud. Both stations broadcast English and native music, and announcements were given in both English and Japanese. JQAIv did a tremendous amount of talking in Japanese (or maybe Chinese!). BROADCASTING STATIONS. Following is a list of broadcasting stations that may be heard on sensitive wireless receiver® in Canterbury:
