MAORI BOY RECEIVES FATAL INJURIES.
Per Press Association. GISBORNE, May 19. A fatality occurred at Matawai this morning, when a four-year-old Maori boy, Mahunga Poi Poi, succumbed from injuries to an eye, accidentally inflicted by his father. The deceased's parents took the boy with them when eeling on the Ivoianga stream, beyond Matawai. The father was landing an ell# with a pitchfork; and. not knowing that the child was near, swung the fork round to throw an eel to the ground. The fork struck the boy and one prong pierced his eye.
