DANGEROUS PIECE OF LEGISLATION, SAYS MR WILLIAM HUGHES.

CRITICISES AMENDING OF ARBITRATION BILL. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegrs ph.—Copy rlgh 1.) (Received Mav 19. 11.30 am.) CANBERRA. May 18 Mr William Hughes, on resuming the debate on the amending of the Arbitration Bill, described the provision regarding strikes and lock-outs as the most dangerous piece of legislatitm conceivable. It was a sort of twoedged weapon, which would drive unionists into one big uqion to safeguard themselves against industrial civil war. The Attorney-General must see that he could not imprison thousands of men who defied the Government. The great danger to-dav was Communism, which was deliberate!'* working on the malleable clay of society for the destruction of civilisation. Communists equally were enemies of the industrial uifion. The Government should set up machinery to deal with men like Jock Garden as a surgeon would with deal with cancer. Mr Hughes supported the Bill generally. The debate was adjourned.—Australian Press Association.
