PROPOSED LAY-OUT FOR THE SQUARE.
CITY COUNCIL HAS NOT CONSIDERED WHAT STEPS IT WILL TAKE. Neither the Mayor, the Rev J. K. Archer, nor Councillor D. G. Sullivan, M.P., chairman of the Finance Committee of the City Council, was prepared to make any statement this morning regarding what action is likely to be taken by the council in view of the refusal of the Board of Health to authorise the raising of a loan without a poll of ratepayers for the purpose of carrying out its proposals in regard to Cathedral Square. The Board of Health expressed the view that the question was one for the City Council to settle with its own ratepayers, stating that it was not concerned with the council’s policy in regard to Cathedral Square. The matter has not 3-et been considered by the council or the Labour majority on the council, but it is possible that it will be discussed at a meeting of the Labour caucus to-night. No indication has been given of the probable intentions of the council, but several councillors are strongly of opinion that the scheme should be carried out in its entirety and financed out of the ordinary revenue of the council.
The matter will probabls r be considered at the next meeting of the council, which will be held on Monday, June
