“GOOD OLD DIGGER.”

SAY IT IN NOVEMBER. (Special to the “ Star.”) DARGAVILUC, May 15. ‘‘Good old digger!” was the cry which interrupted the Prime Minister dining his speech at Kirikopuni, when officially opening the recently completed section of railway from Waiotira. In characteristic fashion Mr Coates stopped and looked hard at the noisy tme. ‘‘By heavens, I want ‘good old digger’ at the next election,” was the Prime Minister's retort. “Make no mistake about that. If there is any section of people who owe me consideration it is the men of the Public Works Department. Their conditions of work, of pay, and of hours, and the improvements for their settlement which have been introduced, have all come about since the present Government has occupied the Treasury benches. If they turn dog on me they are not the sort of chaps I take them for. However, I am not here to make a political speech.” (Hear, hear.)
