COUNCIL EMPLOYEES TO HAVE DAY OFF ON JUBILEE DAY.
mayor will ask CITIZENS TO OBSERVE DAY AS HOLIDAY. Although the decision of yesterday’s meeting of retailers to close their premises from 12.45 to 3 p.m. only on Jubilee Day (Monday, May 28) will apply to the retail establishments in the city, the Mayor, the Rev J. K. Archer, stated to-day that he proposes to ask the citizens generally to observe the day as a holiday. The banks would be closing for the whole day, and the City Council employees would be given a whole holiday, and he hoped that other employers would observe the day as a holiday. The Mayor has written to the secretary of the Canterbury Employers’ Association requesting that employers should agree to allow any persons in their emplov who are taking part in the procession on Jubilee Day to cease at noon, thereby enabling them to be on the assembly ground not later than 1.15 p.m. It is pointed out that it is very essential that the procession should start from Moorhouse Avenue at 1.30 p.m. sharp. If this is done it is estimated that the procession will reach Lancaster Park at 2.50 p.m., which will be in time for the living chess game, commencing at 3 p.m.
