The Pukeko was built by the Goole Shipbuilding and Repairing Company to the order of Richardson and Company as an additional unit of their fleet of coastal vessels. In general appearance she is not unlike the Pakura, but a small funnel gives her a squat aspect. She is 180 ft in length, and draws 13ft 3in when loaded, having a registered tonnage of 322.48. Her engines were constructed by Messrs Plenty and Sons, Ltd., and are capable of driving the ship at a speed of 9.5 knots. The Pukeko was launched on December 12, atjd after completing her trials she sailed from Hull on March 3 under the command of Captain A. M’Lauclilan. The voyage was protracted because after her call at Panama adverse weather was encountered, and the coal she took on at Panama proved to be not of the best. She brought to New Zealand a cargo of coal from the United Kingdom, and when she lias discharged this she will sail for Auckland, where slid will undergo overhaul, after which she will work in conjunction with the Mako on the Napier-Auckland, via East Coast bays run.
