N.Z. Should Run Olympic Appeal On Business-like Lines

AT a meeting of the New Zealand Olympic Council on Tuesday, Mr J. P. Heenan suggested a scheme for raising funds to finance future New Zealand Olympic teams. Roughly, his idea is to approach all persons interested in amateur sport for a weekly contribution of 1s 6d at Christmas. A sub-com-mittee was set up to report on the matter. The scheme is practically identical with that suggested by the “Star” shortly after' the conclusion of the-1924 Games, under the heading, “To Olympic or Not to Olympic.” It was then pointed out that the last-hour system was so unsatisfactory that it should be dropped, and a Dominion-wide appeal made to the public and supporters of sport for a stated contribution to extend over a period of at least three years. Had the suggestion been taken up by the Olympic Council at the time it was made, there would have been sufficient funds available to finance a larger team than has been sent, and an eight-oared crew as well.
