SCANDAL OVER SHARKEYDELANEY FIGHT.
NEW YORK, May 2. There are grave rumours that the Sharkey-Delaney fight, this week, was “fixed.” Sharkey knocked out Delaney within a minute of the start. Mr Farley, of the New York Boxing Commission, is investigating. Rumours that the fight was “fixed” beforehand had been prevalent fo~ several weeks. It was notorious that Delanev was poorly trained. Even then nobody can understand why Delaney, supposed to be one of the cleverest boxers in the game, who had stood up against Risko and Heeney. could be dropped with the first right-hander from Sharkey. Neither can anyone understand why Sharkey was made a five to one favourite, and how it came that wise bettors wer# able to wager in advance that the fight would end with a knockout in the first round. “In” the Wicket. H. T. W. Ilardinge, the England and Kent cricketer, who is just forty-two years of age, is one of the select band who have represented England both at cricket and Association football. Cricket, however, is his favourite game. He began to figure in matches at a very early age and at first, so the tale goes, played the humble role of wicket, for his elder brother, when wheeling “H. T. W.” out in his pram, used to engage in cricket matches with other boys and the pram was used as a wicket. . Wanganui are seeking material to sneet Taranaki at Wanganui on June 4 (says the “Dominion”). A trial match has been arranged at Marton on Saturday next, when a team selected from the Rangitikei and Taihapc sub-unions will try conclusions with a fifteen selected from the Wanganui and Wairoa sub-unions.
