JUBILEE CELEBRATION.
To the Editor. Sir. —Reading in this day’s “ Star ” I was amazed to find the decision of “ Canterbury Employers’ Association,” which opposed the observation of Jubilee Day by the closing of shops. First I would like to know if all members of the association were notified as to the meeting. I say they were not, as I know members who had no knowledge of the meeting being held. That being so, how can it be said that the decision arrived at was the unanimous opinion of the employers? To my mind it is an insult to the pioneers of this Dominion to observe the Diamond Jubilee by closing for 2i hours. Mr Editor, if I may still further claim your indulgence, there is another aspect of the position, namely, if the employers had to lose the wages for the day, there would have been no hesitation on the part of the few employers who have seen fit to boss the show. No, it is just another demonstration of the patriotic and professional civic pride of people whose belief ceases to exist when it touches their pockets. Away with this professional sentimentality and be honest. Hoping some abler pen than mine will take this matter up.—l am, etc., JOHN CITIZEN.
