"BUY BRITISH GOODS,” IS THE SLOGAN.

EMPIRE SHOPPING WEEK COMMENCES. Empire Shopping Week opened auspiciously in Christchurch to-day, when displays were made in large numbers of shops of goods made within the Empire. The displays, assisted by the posters which have been widely distributed, are designed to call attention to the importance of trading within the Empire. The interest of shopkeepers in the effort has been evidenced by the continued demand for posters. The competitions for the best window displays have had the effect of stimulating interest so far as the shopkeepers are concerned. The groups and the prizes offered are:— Group A, drapers, two prizes, one of £5 and one of £2 10s. Group B, hardware, two prizes, one df £3 and one of £2. C, grocers, one prize of £2 10s. D, footwear, one prize of £2 10s. E, New Zealand-made goods, two prizes, one of £3 and one of £2. F, Empire toys and fancy goods, one prize of £2 10s. It is uncertain when the judging will take place, but it is probable that an effort will be made to have the judging of the footwear displays made early, as the boot shops sell largely from their windows. An effort is being made to have a procession of British motor-cars. From twenty-five to thirty cars have been arranged for, and it is proposed that they shall be decorated with posters. Posters appeared in all the trams this morning, while posters were also displayed in the trains and leaflets distributed. The display made by the Tramway Board on the top of the shelter in Cathedral Square did much to call attention to the campaign.
