SHOPS WILL CLOSE FROM 12.45 TO 3 P.M.

EMPLOYERS’ MEETING GIVES DECISION. That shops in the city should close during the afternoon of Jubilee Day, May 28, from 12.45 p.m. till three, o'clock, was the decision arrived at this morning:, when a large number of city employers met to receive a deputation from the Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee. Mr C. Ogilvie presided. The business was dealt with in committee. It is understood that the deputation laid three proposals before the meeting: —(l> That the shops should close all day; (2) that they should close for the afternoon: and (3) % that they should close from 12.45 pjn. till three o’clock. The decision of the meeting of retailers this morning to close their premises from 12.45 to 3 p.m. was unanimous, after several other propositions put to the meeting previously had been narrowly defeated. The decision of the meeting was communicated to the Mayor (the Rev JK. Archer) by Mr W. Cecil Prime, secretary of the Canterbury Employers’ Association. “It is a pity that they have decided to close for a few hours only instead of observing a holiday, but I suppose it can’t be helped,” the Mayor remark ed.
