TIME CHINESE WAS TAUGHT LESSON, SAYS S.M.—FINED £7 10/-.

(Special to the “ Star.”) WANGANUI, May 2. “ The mild-eyed Chinese who deliver vegetables to the back door are not so innocent as they look,”* remarked Inspector Johns in Court to-day, when Kwong Quong ,Fore was charged with using unstamped scales. “ They say they always sell by measurement, but that is not a fact. They invariably carry spring-balance scales of a type not approved, and unstamped. If they think anyone is looking, thej' weigh the vegetables low down in the ca/t.”

Kwong’s driver remarked: “Alii li. Always givum good measure.” As Kwong has been before the Court on two previous occasions for a similar offence, the Magistrate remarked that it was time he was taught a lesson. A fine of £7 10s was imposed.
