The Star. TUESDAY, MAY 1, 1928. LINKS WITH THE PAST.

still proudly preserves relics of its early days, like the old hitching post where legislators in the ’fifties tied their horses outside the Provincial Council Chambers. Things like the old pound and rubbish dump that existed in Market Square have disappeared, it is true, and the square has been re-named, but in certain other directions the city shows a reluctance to grow up. For instance, it still clings to a stock saleyard on the very fringe of the city, in a residential suburb that ought to have been incorporated in Greater Christchurch long ago. Quite recently a restless bull walked into a Riccarton resident’s drawing room and sought sanctuary behind a settee. Children going to school have to avoid mobs of cattle on two or three days of every week. It is not surprising that the Riccarton Borough Council should have sought, and obtained, authority to prohibit the driving of mobs of more than fifty cattle through the streets. The by-law is decidedly forbearing, for the public interest demands that saleyards of the magnitude of Addington should be moved away from close’v populated districts. The city abattoir, like the various freezing works, lias bad to go out of the city proper, and it is altogether desirable that the stock yards should move with the times. Riccarton moves slowly in these matters, but it is not to be disputed that the saleyards arc holding the district back and it is surprising that the representatives of the people have not realised the fact long before now.
