NEW REGULATIONS MADE TO CONTROL TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF THEATRES.

The Chief Traffic Inspector of the City Council is of opinion that it is desirable that a space in front of places of amusement be kept clear of vehicular traffic for a short period before the commencement of a performance, during the performance, and also for a short time afterwards, similar to the regulations already adopted in inference to the Theatre Royal in Gloucester Street.

At last night’s meeting of the council the By-Laws Committee recommended that the following regulation should be passed:—“ During the period beginning thirty minutes prior to the commencement and ending fifteen minutes after the conclusion in any licensed building of any performance, entertainment or gathering therein, no person shall permit any vehicle except for the. purpose of actually setting down or picking up passengers to stand or stop in a space 33 feet in length on each side of the entrances to or exits from such buildbig and extending the whole width of the street, provided that, nothing in this regulation shall apply to a licensed vehicle while standing on a stand appointed for its accommodation and that this regulation to be read subject to any regulation now or hereafter to be made having application to the traffic in the vicinity of any particular licensed building or buildings, and that the general regulation •of the council relating to vehicles remaining on streets, shall be read subject here-

to.” The committee further recommended tha»t the regulation should come into force on May 9, 1925. The recommendations were approved. Councillor E. R. M’Combs said that complaints had been made to her about the parking of cars outside halls where smoke concerts were in progress. She asked if the same regulations could not be brought in in respect of these places as those in force with regard to dance halls. The Mayor said that the regulations applied only to certain halls, and, if other halls were to be brought under the regulations, the council would have to go through the whole process again.
