ENGINEER’S REPORT TO BE PRINTED.
At a recent meeting of the City Council a discussion arose over a proposal made by the By-laws Committee that the City Engineer’s highways report, dealing with suggested improvements to the streets of the city, should be printed. Several councillors expressed the opinion that it was not necessary to have the report printed, and that typewritten copies would serve the purpose. The matter was referred back to the committee, which reported at last night’s meeting of the council that, after further consideration, it had decided to accept the tender of Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd., at 27s 6d per page, for 300 copies, which it was estimated would cost £345. It was considered that the report would run Into between 180 and 200 pages, but the committee was of opinion that this number could be reduced by accepting a suggestion that the schedules attached to the report could be printed two or three on a page. Tills would materially reduce the estimated total cost. A further reduction in the cost could be made by selling some of the copies. The report of the committee was adopted. Councillors M. E. Lyons and A. W. Beaven asked that their votes be recorded against the adoption of the report.
