COUNCIL MAY MAKE CLOSING ORDER FOR TWO CITY RESIDENCES.

MUST BE REPAIRED IN TWENTY-EIGHT DAYS.

The City Council met last night; present—The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) and Councillors Elizabeth R. M’Combs, 11. T. Armstrong. M.P., M. E. Lyons. E. H. Andrews. T. 11. Butterfield, R. M. Macfarlane, .1. W. Roberts, J. W. Beanland. A. W. Beaven, George Manning. P. W. Sharpe, D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and C. L. Carr.

The Sanitary Committee reported that, at the request of the Medical Officer of Health, the chief city inspector had inspected two premises situated on Ferry Road and Colombo Street respectively and reported that considerable repairs would be required to make the dwellings habitable. The committee recommended that notice be served on the owners to carry out the necessary repairs within twenty-eight days and that they be informed that, if the notice was not complied with, steps would be taken to issue a closing order under the provisions of Section 40 of the Health Act, 1920. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Annie E. Herbert, F. R. Cooke and G. R. Hunter. The Finance Committee reported that the council’s share of the Avonside channelling loan of £5700, amount ing to £5409 16s lOd, fell due on March 24, 1929. The committee recommended that the Town Clerk be instructed to take the necessar}- steps to raise a loan of £5400 and that the balance of £9 16s lOd be paid out of the general account. The Woolston recreation ground loan of £750 fell due on March 31, 1929. The sinking fund would not be sufficient to meet the loan, and approximately £4OO would have to be raised. The committee recommended that the Town Clerk be instructed to take the necessary steps to raise the amount required. The report was adopted The tender of Phipps Black for the supply of a quantity of tallow wood for cross-arms in connection with overhead line work at a cost of £ll9 3s 9d was accepted, as also was the tender of the same firm for the supply of 375 poles at a cost of £lOl4 15s lOd. The tenders of the Rudge Electrical Company for the supply of a quantity of aerial cable at a cost of £483 7s 6n, and of G. J. Watson for the erection of a brick sub-station in May’s Roa-l at a cost of £305 were accepted. The tender of Hepburn and Sonfor the supply of a thousand meter covers and lids and of two thousand stop cock covers and lids at a total cost of £435 8s 4d was accepted. The Town Planning and Housing Committee reported that Mr J. A. Brown had applied for permission to erect a shop at the corner of Radley and Marshall Streets, Woolston. Provision for the rounding of. this corner had been made in connection with a subdivision which was receiving the consideration of the committee. MiBrown desired to erect a shop right up to the building line and consequents upon the line which would be required for the rounding of the corner. In view of the cirpum stance!*, the committee had refused the application. Two of the purchasers of houses erected by the council in Huxley Street in 1920 had written drawing attention to the fact that owing to the concrete, foundations of the houses not being satisfactory. the concrete had cracked in many places. Competitive designs were called for when the houses were erected and the building was carried out under the supervision of the successful achitects. The cit\* building inspector had reported that the cost of effecting tinnecessary repairs would be about £l5O and £75 respectively, and the committee proposed to take the matter up with the architects who designed thr* houses.

The report was adopted. The Works Committee recommended that Cranford Street, which was at present in a very bad condition, be regraded and metalled at a cost of £525, provision for this expenditure to he made on the current year estimates. The recommendation was approved.
