RICCARTON COUNCIL ASKS FOR CHANGE IN NAME OF HAGLEY AV.

SEWER CONNECTIONS TO BE TUNNELLED UNDER FOOTPATH IN FUTURE. The Riccarton Borough Council met last evening; present—the Mayor (Mr H. Manhire). and Councillors R. G. Malcolmson, T. M., Ford, H. Gudsell, R. Hepburn, L. Onnandy, J. F. Peters and R. 11. Rankin. Letters were received from the Prime Minister, the Minister of Public Works, Mr 11. S. S. Kyle, M.P., and the Hon G. Witty, M.L.C., in connection with a subsidy on bituminous-concrete construction of the Riccarton Road within the borough. The council was strongly in favour of getting a £3 for £1 subsidy on the reconstruction work. The letters were received, and the matters were referred to the deputation which will meet the Highways Board to-.dav. An invitation was received from the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr J. K. Archer, to .the borough to take part in the jubilee celebrations. It was resolved to thank the Mayor for the invitation, and to leave the arrangements in the hands of a committee. Accounts amounting to £7442 11s lid were passed for payment. The report of the By-laws Committee, that the by-law governing overhanging fences and trees be put into force, was approved. It was also decided to approve of the subdivisional plan of Mr Conlan’s property. The Hall Committee reported in favour of the purchase of a new piano for concerts only, and that the scale of fees for the use of the hall and the new piano be 30s an evening. The report was adopted. The report of the Works Committee outlined repair work done in the borough. The engineer was instructed to push on the work in the south-west area and to see that more rolling is carried out. and that all future patching is done with broken metal. The Electricity Committee reported that twenty-six permits for installations and extensions had been issued. Throughout the year ended March 31 no failure or stoppage of supply occurred in the borough through the fault of borough apparatus or employees. It was recommended that the Wharenui School Baths Committee be given twelve months’ notice of cancellation of the agreement regarding the bath pump owing to the sewer now being available for use. It was decided to write to the City Council asking that the name of I lagley Avenue be changed, as there was a great deal of confusion between Hagley Avenue, running from the Hospital to Lincoln Road, and Hagley Street, on the boundarv of the Riccarton Borough. It was decided that no more permits be. issued for the cutting of the footpath on the south side of Riccarton Road for the installation of sewer connections. In future all work will have to be tunnel led_under the footpath.
