Mr A. G. Henderson returned from Wellington yesterday. Dr Marehant’s resignation of his post as honorary opthalmic surgeon was accepted by the Wellington Hospital Board with regret, and it was decided that a letter be forwarded accepting, with thanks, his offer to continue to act until the return of Dr Cohen, who is applying for about six months’ leave.

The Rev D. C. Bates, formerly director of the Meteorological Office of New Zealand has. at the invitation of the Bishop of Christchurch, taken temporary charge of the parish of Ashburton. The vacancy was caused by the death of the Rev Franklyji Wiseman. Mr R. N. Jones, Chief Judge of the Native Land Court, who recently suffered a brief illness, is reported to be recuperating satisfactorily in Gisborne. In recognition of his services as member for the district, the residents of Ihuraua presented the Hon A. D. M’Leod with an illuminated address. Professor A. P. W. Thomas has been re-elected chairman of the Auckland Grammar Schools Board of Governors and Dr E. Roberton vice-chairman. The New South Wales section of the Australian Aero Club have offered Sir Charles Wakefield, governing director of C. C. Wakefield and Co., Ltd., an honorary life membership and vicepresidency of the Hub. Sir Charles Wakefield has cabled his acceptance of this honour. The Hub also coupled the name of Mr Cyril L. Westcott. general manager for Australia and New Zealand for the same firm, and Mr Westcott has signified his acceptance. Reference was made at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Savage Club on Saturday evening to the valuable services rendered by the late Mr Justice Alpers and Mr T. W. Rowe, both of whom were enthusiastic Savages and took the keenest of interest in the welfare of the club. Speaking of Mr Alpers, Savage E. R. Webb outlined his career at the Bar and subsequent elevation to the Supreme Court Bench. A man of great versatility, he said, had been one of the foundation members of the club, and, with Mr Rowe, had taken a prominent part in its administration. The demise of these gentlemen was a serious loss, not onlv to the club, but to the community. Officers of the Wellington City Council staff bade farewell to Mr 11. Baillie. who is retiring from the position of Chief Librarian after twenty-six years of service to the city. The Town c 'ierk. Mr E. P. Norman, spoke of Mr Baillie’s long and faithful service to the City Council. Mr Baillie, he said, had made the library one of the features of the city. He had started the reference department, had originated the filing system which had been adopted by other libraries in the Dominion, and had earn ed the affection and esteem of all who served with him It was with the greatest regret that they would say good bye to Mr Baillie. but they would wish him a long and happy retirement. (Applause«) Mr Norman presented Air Baillie with a case of bowls on behalf of the City Council staff.

The Rev Norman Webster, who underwent an operation at “ The Limes ” recently, is making a slower recovery than was anticipated, but yesterday his condition was reported to be showing improvement. KeTr (Nelson) are guests at the United Service Hotel. The appointment of Senor Don Pedro A. Satonas de Dameto, Marques de Bellpuig. as Consul of Spain for the Dominion, has been gazetted. Mr A. W. Johnston has lv»en appointed a member of the Legislative Council of Western Samoa, in succession to Mr O. F. Nelson. Mr 11. A. Young, S.M.. has been appointed chairman of the Licensing Committees for the districts of Napier, Waipawa and Ilawke's Bay. In appreciation of his services as country adviser to the South Auckland Rugby Union for the past eight years, Mr T. 11. Patterson, Senior Instructor of Agriculture in Auckland, who is leaving shortly to take up an appointment in Australia, has been presented with an inscribed silver cigarette case. Mr J Dean, president of the union, in making him the presentation on behalf of the management committee, reierred to the valuable work in the interests of the game done by Mr Patterson in the consolidation of the sub-unions throughout the district. A presentation of a travelling rug was made at a gathering at Hamilton to Mr R. T. Reid, for some years president of the Waikato Trotting Club, by members of the club. Mr Reid resigned his position on being appointed a stipendiary steward to the New Zealand Trotting Conference Mr Reid* services to trotting in the Waikato were eulogised by r several speakers. Presentations from the subscribers io the Leys Institute Librarv. Auckland, were made at the annual meeting to the librarian. Mr T Xorrie and Mrs Norrie the former having been appointed chief librarian in Wellington. The president. Mr W. CeHl Levs, in presenting Mr Xorrie with an engraved inkstand and Mrs X'orrie with a fruit bowl, referred to the excellent work both had done at the institute during th° part four years.
