JOCKEY CLUB BALL

NAVAL VISITORS ENTERTAINED Clumps of tree fern, and greenery and a maze of green, mauve, gold and black streamers arranged to give the effect of a big chandelier, were the principal decorations in the Bay Hall, Timaru, on Friday night, when the South Canterbury Jockey Club held its first annual ball. Hitherto the club has not had any social function associated with any of its meetings, but it was felt that such a venture would prove welcome, and this was fully borne out by the exceptionally large attendance, and despite heavy rain. The two lounges were the essence of cosiness, and the supper rooms were arranged so as to afford every degree of comfort. In these apartments the colour schemes were on similar lines to that of the dance hall, paper streamers being interrupted with the green foliage, while vases of yellow chrysanthemums added to the general appearance. The guests of the evening were Commodore C, T. C. Swabey and officers of H.M.S/ Dunedin. The debutantes were: Miss Kathleen Robinson, Mias Nan Orbell, Miss Dorothy Kerr and Miss Nan Cossins. Miss Kathleen Robinson wore a distinctive frock of pink taffetas, made with a full skirt, with pink lace insertions and a large scquinned cabachon at the side. A bouquet of shaded roses completed this charming frock. Miss Dorothy Kerr (Cave), pale pink taffetas and silver tissue, daintily embroidered with silver sequins, to form chrysanthemums the same trimming being repeated on the short bodice. A bouquet of roses in deeper tones than the dress added charm to this dainty frock. Miss Nan Orbell, a dainty frock of ivory georgette, three tiers of beautiful ivory lace forming the skirt. A bunch of red roses at the left side and a bouquet of roses to match, made a charming finish to an attractive frock. Miss Nan Cossins, palest pink charmalaine frock, the full skirt made with the fashionable uneven hem, and finished with a band of pink net, a swathed belt “of deeper coloured velvet and bouquet of roses to tone completed a very dainty toilette. Miss Betty Gillies (debutante), pale pink taffetas bouffant frock, with gold lace corsage. A bouquet of shaded roses enhanced the charm of this dainty frock. Others present included: Mrs H.
