By Special Correspondent of the " Star." NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS. At the Papanui School, Mr F. W. Sisson was -elected chairman. Of the 32 children who sat for proficiency, 26 gained proficiency certificates and four competencies. During the year, the library has been enriched by 220 books and now they number 840. Swimming classes by the teachers had enabled 20 scholars to win the New Zealand Swimming Association’s certificate. Medals have been "given for school boy and girl championships.

The proprietors of the Christchurch Nurseries had given a quantity of roses and shrubs for the grounds. During the year the school road had been widened, considerably improving the appearance of the school frontage.

An effort is to be made to have sewer connections installed.

And at the Waimairi School: Mr H. Tillman was elected chairman and Mrs Merrin secretary.

The second tennis court is completed, and when the- netting is fixed a tennis club is to be formed. This should result in at least £3O a year income to the school. The children will have the use of the courts on school days ancl Saturday mornings, free, with the probability, of steel racquets and balls being provided. The suggested fee for club members is £1 a year. After the householders’ meeting the committee met and decided to hold the usual euchres and dances. Mention was made in the report of one of the masters. It read: “It is not always desirable to mention any particular teacher, but in this instance it would not be- fair to pass without special mention being made of Mr Evans, whose interest in the children is exceptional, especially in regard to the musical side of their training. The committee has deeply appreciated Mr Evans’s work.” Waimairi girls and boys under Mr Evans are well known “on the air” from 3YA. ANZAC DAY. Papanui’s first Anzac Day combined chui'ches’ service was very successful and the whole tone of the proceedings most impressive. The sum of £6 3s was taken at the doors. PERSONAL. .At the Elmw’ood School meeting of householders the head master, Mr Sinclair, spoke of the great loss the school had sustained through the • retirement of Miss A. Hodgson, and mentioned her most excellent years of work. The best social ever held in connection with tire Papanui Methodist Church was that tendered Mr and Mrs Marshall and Mr and Mrs E. A. Jones last Saturday night, as Mr Marshall remarked: “If he had known he was so popular he would not have gone away.” Mr R. W. Hawke, in proposing the health of Mr and Mrs Marshall, said that Mr Marshall’s father had been connected with the church for thirty }*ears, and the son for eight years, and it was always a pleasure to work with both father and son. Mr Hawke also spoke of Mrs Marshall’s willingness to help on all occasions. Mr Haynes proposed the health of Mr and Mrs Jones, and said Mr Jones was always a friend to the boys, and his labour as leader of the Bible Class was of the utmost value. Mrs Jones’s work in connection with the primary department of the Sunday School was likewise much appreciated. Miss I. Robinson spoke of the great w’ork of Miss Ruby Marshall as head of the Sunday School primary department.

Special reference was made by the chairman, the Rev Hopper, to Mrs Bond and her helpers.

NOTES. At a recent meeting of the Waimairi Council the final decision was made with regard to heating the hall. The scheme is to be gone on with straight away. The carnival dance organised by Mrs E. J. Kettle and Mr H. Eagleton, -was an outstanding success. The “ Snake Trail ” had 275 ribs, and was enthusiastically encored. The winners of the lucky spot were Miss Morwood and Mr O’Connor; of the musical chairs, Miss L} r nch and Mr Grose. Mrs C. Smith played for the exhibition dances, and extras were played by Mr F. Comyns.

It was stated at the Waimairi householders’ meeting that the Waimairi scholars had the best teeth in Christchurch.

A mistake -was made last week in crediting C. E. Ayrey with being the winner of the snooker tournament. There are still seven in, namely P. Smith, N. Rossiter, A. Curry, R. Clark! J. Pearce, C. E. Ayrey and L. Barnard.

FOOTBALL. The committee of the Waimairi Football Club wish to thank Mr R. Rickerby for the way he had met them in regard to the use of a training The club is losing the services of T. Macdonald, who is going to Waimate for a time. The recent success of the senior team is very satisfactory to the selectors, for they promoted the young players, and they have justified their selection! A meeting of the Memorial Hall Committee was held on Thursday evening, Mr W. G. Chapman presiding. A balance-sheet for the last nine months was submitted and the position was most satisfactory. In spite of the reduced rental and after pa}lng £73 fs Id rates, there was a credit balance of £7B 13s 3d. The receipts w-ere £274 3s 2d, and the expenditure £197 9s lid. The main hall was let on forty-one nights, exclusive of the pictures. PAPANUI DOMAIN BOARD. A meeting of the Papanui Domain Board was held on Thursday evening. Mr F. W. Sisson presided', and there were also present—Messrs W. J. Walter, J. Munro, C. G. Derrett, J. Carrington! S. Kruse and IT.- Tillman. The matter of ploughing the domain was left to a later meeting. It was decided that the first business in regard to laying out the domain would be the removal of the poplars and the erection of fences.

A discussion took place on the training track being used by cyclists on Sunday. The chairman and secretary were appointed to go into the matter of framing by-laws.
