RACING AND TROTTING NOTES

RACING NOTES. Acceptances for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps and forfeits for the Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes, are due at eight o’clock to-morrow night, when nominations will close for the minor events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. 4e * * a The autumn meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club will be commenced tomorrow and concluded on Saturday. An extensive scheme of improvements is in progress at the club’s course, involving a complete remodelling of the property, and as the work has not been completed, this week’s meeting is being held at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Wingatui course. With fields in most of the events the racing should be of great interest. * * * * Coastguard is a useful hurdler on his good days, but he is an uncertain jumper and for that reason he is not a favourite with backers. * * # * Beauty Light has registered some smart performances over hurdles this season and he may get some more money this week. V ♦ V * Captain Sarto has been on the down grade as a hurdler for some time. At his best, with only 9.4 to carry, he would experience little trouble in beating the field that he will meet at the Oamaru meeting, but he has no recent form to recommend him. * * aje * . There is a big field in the Novice stakes, at the Oamaru meeting. More tran half of them are three-year-olds and upwards, many with no claims to notice. If the two-year-olds have any pretensions to class, they should have the race to themselves. Dumblane and Wine Tray have shown a bit of form in fair company. * ♦ * * The Wingatui trainer, F. Shaw, will have his gift horse. Radiant Knight, racing among the maidens at the Oamaru meeting. When in training at Riccarton he showed some speed, but he may not be at his best yet, as he has been in work only a few weeks, following on a spell, necessitated by an accident. * * * Pink Note, who jarred a joint a few days ago, will not be a starter in the North Otago Cup. ‘ The field is likely to be small. * sje * * Wayward was sore after racing at Waimate and he may not be racing again for some time. * * * * Overhaul will require to win the North Otago Cup to be worth serious consideration for his important engagements at Riccarton net month. * v * * Booster looks a class above the opposition he will meet in ,the Flying Handicap at the Dunedin meeting. His form will be watched with interest, as he is a good prospect for the Great Easter Handicap, if he is at his best. * * * * Rotor is engaged at the Oamaru meeting, being top weight in the Grange Handicap. He will require to improve a lot ■on his recent form to have much chance. V * * * Camisader is a smart hack. - who should be worth following at the Oamaru meeting. Black Duke will be hard to beat in the Anniversary Handicap at the Oamaru meeting. He- is seen at his best at Wingatui. * * * * Master John, the winner of the Waitangi Hack Handicap at Waimate, is a particularly well-bred gelding* representing a very Successful line. .He is by Day Comet'from Mistress Jack, by Uhlan from Revenant, by Nelson from Phantom, by Musket from imported Atlantis, who earned great fame as the dam of the successful sire, St Leger. Mistress Jack had numerous progeny but her first foal, Jack Delaval, was the best. The mare, in foal tq Dav Comet, was purchased a few years ago by the late Mr G. B. Starkv, and it was at his property. Spye, in North ( anterbury, that Master John was foaled. He was the last of the old mare’s stock. She missed the following season and Mr J. B. Starky, under whose care she was at the time, shot her. * * * * It is reported from Dunedin that Pink Note is to be treated to a spell until taken up for next season. lie is quite sound on the leg that was damaged when making his winning effort in the Dunedin Cup, but appears to have jarred a front fetlock when working at Wingatui a few days ago. J?ink Note has run in forty-one races, of which he won twelve, w : hile he has run second in eight and third in five His winnings amount to £3551 10s • * * • Martarma’s sister, Barryanda, has shown O. Cox such good track work that he has often been confident that she would run well in her engagements. Up till Saturday, however, her public form had for a long time been very disappointing, although at Wanganui last month she was not very lucky. At Opunake on Saturday. Barryanda not only got on the winning list, but won a double, and now that she has made a start she might pick up a good stake at the Easter meetings.

TROTTING NOTES. J. Lorgelly has the American pacer Direct Tod looking very well. Direct ! Tod raced in good form on the West Coast last month, and will be racing ! at Wanganui next week. * * * * Tiny Moon trotted really well at the New Brighton meeting last week, finishing fast at the end of two miles. Itfclooks as though she may win a race in the near future. * si! * * Loganwood is fast getting back to his best form again. He has quite recovered from the injury he received in the paddock, and is doing capitally in his training. The consistent pacer is almost certain to win another race before the end of the season. His owner still is training Loganwood at New Brighton. * * * * J. N. Clarke is now commencing to give his two-year-old by Guy Parrish from his mare Leila Denver some fast work. The young pacer has furnished a good deal during the last few months and in a recent work-out at New Brighton he showed good form. Clarke has a y*earling bred the same way, and the marc is again in foal to the American stallion. * sj£ * 5* Taurekareka, who looks big and well, did not go freely in a work-out this week at New Brighton over a mile and a half. Taurekareka, however, is not a good track horse. * * * * The two-year-okl by* Sonoma Harvester from Fatality is now being jogged by A. G. Wilson. It looks as though it will take some time before he comes to his best speed, but he has a good way of doing his work, and he is now well-mannered and quiet on the track. He should furnish into a strong, powerful horse, and be solid over a two-mile journey. * # * * Brigand is being kept in work, .but it seems hopeless to expect the American stallion to stand a solid preparation. He is usually very sore after being worked fast. * * * * Avenger went a capital race at New Brighton in the two-mile event last Thursday. His trainer states that the pacer does not race well on the track on which he is trained, and last week’s effort was easily* his best showing there. * * * * The Lee Norris—Maori Princess trotter has furnished a good deal, and is now a commanding horse. He has not c»fsne much fast work of late, but when sent along as a three->*ear-old he showed plenty* of speed. * * * * William the Great did not race up to expectations at New Brighton last week, but the pacer is in good form and is pacing well in training. He may do better in his next effort. The Hawera Trotting Club looks like having a most successful meeting. A large number of Canterbury trainers intend racing horses there at Easter. * * * * Neerson will be racing at the HaTrotting Club's meeting, and will te driven by S. A. Edwards. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. Thursda3 r . The outside of the course proper was again in use at Riccarton this morning, and a fair amount of fast work was accomplished. Goblin Market strode over four furlongs in 50 2-ssec, and his stablemates. Rigmarole and Golden Aritiour, covered six furlongs in Imin 17 l-ssec. Rigmarole fell whilst being pulled up, owing to a bandage coming loose, and her rider, Saxon, sustained a broken collarbone. Footfall and Starfiight recorded a good gallop over nine furlongs in lmin 59 l-ssec, finishing together. Eulalie was ridden out to run seven furlongs in lmin 28 3-ssec, a pleasing effort. Full Feather and Impertinence registered lmin 18sec for six furlongs. Lovedart and Starshooter sprinted four furlongs in 50 3-ssec, Malmsey executing a similar performance. Stormy was restricted to a useful working gallop over six furlongs, occupying lmin 21sec. Tearaway and Swoopalong ran half a mile in 52sec, time that was equalled by* Solferite. Fair Exchange and Crossbow galloped seven furlongs in lmin 32sec. Tarleton finished in front of Nincompoop at the end of six furlongs in lmin 17 3-ssec. Battle Colours went well over seven furlongs traversed in lmin 30sec. Amor and Honeycomb were together well clear of Luminant, after covering five furlongs in lmin 3 l-ssec. Aberfeldy and Sprinkler occupied 51 2-ssec for half a mile, and Bronstell and Spode galloped the same ground in 53sec. Greyfinch beat Light Hearted qver four furlongs in 50 l-ssec. Polydectes was not extended to run six furlongs in lmin 19sec. Assurance finished in front of Hoylake at ths end of five furlongs. Royal Land (E. Shaw) and Gay Oueen (I. Tilson) jumped two hurdles together, both giving improved exhibitions.

TROTTING NOTES FROM AUCKLAND.

(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, March 22. Jewel Wave went a good race to get second to Etta Cole at the Waikato meeting, but the chestnut mare is not a good one, and is not going to find it easy to win a race. She certainly does not appeal as a betting proposition. G. Paton has only a small team nowadays. Just at present his attention is confined to the disappointing trotter The Tartar, also a maiden pacer named Ohena, by Our Thorpe—Ena Bell. Dial won two races last season, and ran second in three others. When she ran second in the Waitoa Handicap at Te Aroha she went 3min 35 3-ssec, and is not badly’ treated in being handicapped on 3min 39£sec in the Hikutaia Handicap at the Thames. Etta Cole won so nicely at Hamilton that there is bound to be solid support for her in her engagements at the Thames meeting. The daughter of Peterwah is only a baby at the game yet, but she looks like developing into a real tip-topper with time. J. Gee was at Epsom yesterday with his team, and all were allotted solid work. Anseline was worked out two miles in company’ with Mulwaree. The pace was not very fast over the first mile, but the last half was done at a good clip, Anseline finishing the better of the pair. Since Medusa won at Hamilton, and was afterwards turned out for a spell, A. Julian has been giving a lot of attention to his trotter Special Bell. The gelding is improving every week, and is likely to be one of the hardest for Etta Cole to catch at the Thames on Saturday. A three-y’ear-old filly by’ Blue Mountain King—Whispering Dell is among the regular workers at Epsom, and she is one of the most promising fillies at headquarters. She has a rare .turn of speed, and, providing she is not hurried in her preparation, she should ! turn out above the ordinary.

C. Lee has worked a big improvement in Carberley of late, and' the maiden trotter is going solidly in his work. In the slow classes ruling at the countrv meetings he should have an outside chance of picking up a stake. He is in at the Thames on Saturday, and will probably go on to Wanganui next week.

For the next three weeks trotting locally will be as quiet as a spiritualist seance. By Friday the majority of local trainers will have left for the Thames meeting. Some will then hit out for Wanganui, while numbers of others will get ready to go to Hawera. There will not be a dozen seasoned horses left at Epsom. All Bell is at present enjoydng a rest in a paddock. His owner- trainer, W. Cockbill, has Ursuline in work. He is taking her to the Thames meeting, where she claims a couple of engagements. She has plenty’ of pace, but is not too reliable at the start, and generally’ settles her prospects before the race is properly’ under way. Temple, who has been off the scene for a long time, and who has been in various stables, is now one of J. Gee’s team. The son of Gold Bell was ridden in a workout by A. Bryce y’esterday, in company with Maid of the Mountains, driven by J. Gee. The mare was always going best, and Temple does not look a good proposition just yet awhile.

J. Shaw has a fair team engaged at the Thames meeting, but there are no good things among them. He has Explosion and Direct Morning in the Cup, and of the pair Explosion may be the better, as lie is more likely to see out two miles than Direct Morning. The latter has the speed to get a position early, but the last couple of furlongs may find him out. Dad’s Hope has been going well for W. Clifton on the track, and if he would go as well on a grass track he would soon pick up a stake. However, while he bowls along in fine styde on the dirt track at Epsom he seems to get all unbalanced when he has to race on the grass. He and Halgana are to race at the Thames meeting, and later Clifton will take the pair, together with Master Councillor, to the Hawera meeting at Easter. Master Councillor has not been asked to do any’ fast work with the hopples on since the Otahuhu meeting, but he is in good condition to be tuned up. The good-looking colt, Great Ballin, in G. Robertson’s stable, looks ready to play his part, and if the son of Ballin would only handle the grass right he would give those opposed to him in the Hikutaia Handicap at the Thames on Saturday’ something to do to keep with him. On the dirt training track at Epsom he is decidedly good for a maiden, but when he gets on the grass be does not appear to be able to handle it at all well. However, he is getting a race or two into him, and when he goes with confidence he should land the money’. Robertson has put in a lot of time with the colt, and it should not be long now before he breaks it for a win. He worked out a mile and a half really well yesterday morning.

CLEARING SALE 07 TROTTING HORSES AT HAWERA AT EASTER

Immediately following the two-days’ meeting of the Ilawera Trotting Club at Easter, one of the biggest dispersal sales of trotting stock, and certainly the most important so far held in the Dominion, will be conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., in conjunction with the Farmers’ Co-oper-ative Organisation Society of New Zealand, Ltd., on behalf of the well-known Hawera owner and breeder Mr J. R. Corrigan. Mr Corrigan’s successes are particularly well known, for during the past ten years he has won stakes to a total of over £30,000, and that period covers one season in which he did not race, and another season in which he had only one representative racing. Despite this, it is claimed that Mr Corrigan’s winnings exceed those of any other owner racing during the same period by at least £SOOO. As might be expected, a man who has been so successful an owner and breeder has now in his old established stud a particularly high-class collection of trotting and pacing stock. His team in training and in the stud now comprise fifty-one head, and the whole of these are to be offered at his sale on Tuesday’, April 10. There are thirty youngsters all told to be disposed of, and the quality of these is indicated by the fact that there are close relatives to such noted performers as Great Bingen, Great Hope, Taraire, Ahuriri, and the American three-y’ear-okl record-breaker Mr M’Elwyn, 1.591. These are only a few of the famous champions and noted performers on the New Zealand and Australian turf of which blood relatives are to be sold. The sale is one that is bound to create great interest amongst owners and breeders.

KING BALBOA & GOOD AS GOLD FAVOURED.

OAMARU RACING CLUB MEETING AT WINGATUI. (By “MARTIAN.”) No doubt on account of the meeting being held at Wingatui, the Oamaru Jockey’ Club has received a very fine list of acceptances for its autumn meeting, to be held to-morrow and on Saturday*. Proceedings will be opened with the Autumn Hurdle Handicap, in which Beauty Light promises to play his part well, while. Red Heather should improve on his Waimate running, where he was second to Goldtown. The Babe is coming right, and should be ready soon. Scion is sure to be prominent, and should be better now than when he ran second to Koauau at Gore. They are mostly an unknown lot in the Novice Stakes, and Green Cloth, who has been executing useful tasks down south, should not have much difficulty in annexing the prize. Clarenson is certainly due, while Radiant Knight is showing some promise. Pink Note . will not be a starter in the North Otago Cup Handicap, and in his absence King Balboa will probably be a strong favourite. Overhaul (8.0) lias a nice weight, but the Tractor gelding has not raced generously this year, and unless he unwinds one of his best efforts he will finish down the course. Heather Lad (7.8) is for a win, and his third in the Waimate Cup shows that he is coming right. Wingatui (7.7) ran so badly at Gore than she was put down as a good miler only, while Wayward will probably not be a starter. King Balboa (7.0) is likely to give a good account of himself. That he can run out a mile and a quarter he proved at Wingatui when he beat First Sight. At Gore he gave Spean Bridge 81b and a beating oyer seven furlongs, the opposition including Lucy Locket, who recently won the Waimate Cup, and who is engaged in this event. It looks as if the winner will come from: — KING BALBOA. HEATHER LAD. The strongest field of the day’ will line up for the Flying Handicap, and an exciting finish can be expected. Booster and Good as Gold will both come in for strong support. Neither was placed on the first day of the Dunedin Cup meeting, but on the second day’, in the Flying Handicap Good as Gold was a good second to Sudden Storm, carrying 5.2, Booster being unplaced. Now Booster meets the Paper Money’ sprinter on 51b better terms, but, as the latter is reported to be in great nick, he should again beat the ex-Riccarton gelding. However, there are others that should add interest to the race. Circulation was third to Sudden Storm and Good as Gold in the race mentioned above, and, with S.G, is sure to be in demand. Then there are John Bradbury and Fairy Herald, both of whom are capable sprinters, while Dismantle and Miss Winkie will not go out friendless. Apple Dighton, too, is expected to win any day’ now. The race is fairly* open, but the winner is likely to come from: GOOD AS GOLD, CIRCULATION, BOOSTER. Quickform has shown a lot of useful form of late, and he -will be hard to beat in tje Grange Handicap. Antrim Boy*, who has raced principally’ in Auckla/.d, is a good sort, while Camisader can cut out a swift six furlongs. If reserved for the Anniversary Handicap, Wingatui and John Bradbury, both of whom have previous engagements, should be handy. Black Duke, who won a double at Waimate, will now have to carry* 9.6, and Gay Sonnet, who is sure to be a contestant, and was beaten by only a neck in the Stewards’ Handicap at Waimate by Black Duke, is sure to give a good account of himself. In the trotting events, Needles and Sunfish should show up in the Waikaura Trot, and Sonata and Nihilist, Junr., in the Landon Trot. The following Is the programme:—

RANGITIKEI CUP IS WON BY VIVO.

(Special to the " Star.”) PALMERSTON N., March 21. The Rangitikei meeting was commenced to-day’ in fine warm weather. The track was hard and fast. There was a good attendance and a feature was the presence of a number of old timers of the turf who are not seen at many meetings. For not riding Miss Boniform out in the Trial Plate R. Reed was fined £lO. In the Ohalcea Hack Hurdles Ely’sianor and Kilburn were solidly backed. Modern being at a very fair price. Mount Marta and Polyphemus began slowly, and at the first fence Elysianor. Modern and Lady Faye led Kilburn and Bonhomme. At tiie stands Mcfd ern, Ely’sianor and Bonhomme just led Lady* Faye, Chrissarte and Kilburn. Bonhomme, Modern and Polyphemus were in front with six furlongs to go. with Elysianor handy and Chrissarto and Lady’ Faye next. Bonhomme, Polyphemus, Modern and Ely*sianor raced to the last fence on terms, and once over, Modern finished too well for Bonhomme, and beat him by’ ‘half a length. Elysianor was three lengths away third, and then came Poly’phemus. Kilburn and Mount Marta. Modern jumped well and Bonhomme very* creditably’ for a first appearance. He should soon do better. Ely’sianor was not too well ridden.

For the Trial Plate, Thrift was backed down to odds on, with Kyngzone and Fee Simple the only others supported to any extent. Thrift, Double Mint and Arkansas were slow away, but Thrift soon ran up and when they settled down Fee Simple and Rash led Vexillum, Kyngzone, Thrift and Skyrider. Crossing the top. Fee Simple and Rash were well clear from Vexillum, Thrift, Skvrider and Kytigzone. Fee Simple and Rash just led Thrift at the turn, with Skyrider, Miss Boniform and Vexillum handy. Rash just beat Fee Simple by a short head, with Thrift, who finished fairly well on. the rails, a neck away, third. Then came Double Mint, Miss Boniform, Skyrider and Royal Black. Thrift was a trifle unlucky’, and Double Mint finished so well well that he might soon win. Rash returned an astounding price. Lady* Desmond was at a short price in the Rangitikei Cup, a fair betting race. Vivo, for whom there was a decided tip, was at a remunerative price. Lady Desmond, Twink and Vivo led down the straight from Opa, Bright Day, Kilmiss and Atareria. Vivo soon drew out, and, with six furlongs to go, she was six lengths clear of Twink, who was two lengths ahead of Lady Desmond. Then at close intervals came Opa, Bright Bay and Atareria. Vivo had come back to her field at the half mile post, where Twink, Atareria, Lady Desmond and Bright Day were all going well. The order at the turn was Vivo, Atareria, Twink, Lady Desmond and Bright Day. Vivo went on and won by two lengths from Lady Desmond who beat Atareria by three-quarters of. a length. Bright Day was fourth and Twink and Kilmiss next. Lady Desmond looked very’ well and the race will improve her. Next time out she will be hard to beat. Vivo was well ridden by W. H. Jones. Atareria had every’ chance. Bright Day’s rider lost his whip at the turn, just when the chestnut was commencing his For the Ngatiapa Hack Handicap, Mendip was at odds on and at no stage gave his backers much cause for concern. With Hymestrason, Mendip led down the back, well clear of Rising Star, Maui, Borsalene, Bissac, Hymestrason and Mendip. They were at one stage six lengths in front, but with three furlongs to go they had come back and just led Maui, Rising Star, Bissac and Tanagra. Mendip shook off his pursuers at the turn and came on to win by four lengths from Maui, wl*o beat Bissac by two lengths and a hall. Hymestrason, Borsalene and Tanagra were next. Mendip, at the weights, outclassed the field. Maui and Bissac ran decent races. In the Scott Memorial Handicap, Vast Acre and Miss Pat, of course, were the only ones backed. Nastori was left. Vast Acre and Miss Pat began smartest from Dobbin and Bonogne. Vast Acre and Dobbin led right round to the turn from Miss Pat. Miss Pat was on the outside, with Partaga next in on the rails. Vast Acre came out to meet Miss Pat and let Partaga up on the rails. Partaga came on to beat Miss Pat by half a head, with Vast Acre three-quarters of a length away*. Dobbin was fourth, and Bonogne beat Nastori home. Partaga was lucky and Miss Pat should have won. For the Pukenui Hack Handicap, Roy*al Acre and Limosa were the best backed, Lieutenant Bill being at a good price. There was a scrimmage just at the barrier rise. Royal Acre, Lieutenant Bill and Airtight escaping best, and Limosa being sent back to last. Down the back the order was Lieutenant Bill, well clear from Royal Acre, Airtight, Vigilance, Sneerer and Sovena. Lieutenant Bill turned for home well clear of Royal Acre and Airtight. There was a little bumping in the straight, but Lieutenant Bill w*as always well clear and won by a little over a length from Roy*al Acre, with Limosa a length away third. Vigilance was fourth, and Airtight and Aropeta next. Limosa was unlucky and should soon win. For the ’Clifton Highweight Handicap, Ruanui was always a very decided favourite, with Manly second choice. Ruanui, Whenuanui and Manly began best, from Oration and Olympic. Racing for the straight, Whenuanui just led from Ruanui, with Oration, Manly and Vesperus handy’. Ruanui, ridden right out, got up to beat Whenuanui by a head. Oration was a length and a quarter away third. Vesperus beat Manly for fourth place. Wilderness bled and was pulled up. Whenuanui should have won. but Ruanui finished well. Manly’s form can be disregarded.

The Carnarvon Hack Handicap saw Orcades always favourite, with plenty of support for Helotis and White Ringlet. Ilelotis was first out from Shining Star, White Ringlet, War Flame and Patearoa. Helotis and Shining Star led across the top from War Flame, Lady* Cynthia and White Ringlet. Three furlongs from home War Flame met trouble and went back to last. Helotis and Shining Star led into the straight from Lady Cynthia, White Ringlet, Orcades and Moutoa Wonder. White Ringlet wore down Ilelotis in the run in, and be#t her by a length and a half. Shining Star was two lengths away third, and then came Lady Cynthia, Orcades, Holus Bolus and Moutoa Wonder. Helotis just failed, but White Ringlet finished well.

BILBO WINS THE OTAUTAU CUP.

(Special to the “Star.”) INVERCARGILL, March 21. The weather was fine, but overcast, for the Otautau Club's annual fixture. There was a fair attendance. The track was very firm and fast, with the result that smart times were registered in several events. The totalisator returns were £2071 10s, less than at Invercargill last season, and £1712 10s below the figures recorded at Otautau in 1926. Red Racer was first fancy for the Crown Stakes Handicap. West Dome was cut out at the start. Caramba was first to show out. but Red Racer took command at the far turn. Leading into the straight Red Racer won comfortably by three lengths from Vinegrove, who was half a length in front of Gayoma, with Nagambie close up fourth; then came Attractive Lady*. For the Wallace Harness Trot, Nelbar was first fancy, carrying over two hundred chances more than Chimingdale, with Lady* Zita seventy supporters off. At the start Chloris, Chimingdale, Red Chimes and Baker Girl lost their chances. Pere Pointer led out, attended by Nelbar to the far turn, where Lady Zita moved into second place, joining the leader at the home turn. Lady Zita went on to win easily by four lengths from Nelbar. Eiffel Tower was three lengths off, third, then came Hiri Chimes, Bon Blue and Tuxedo Chimes. The w’inner was trained and driven by* its owner. Nelbar is a promising three-vear-old filly who is owned and trained by F. Wallis.

Bilbo was a strong favourite for the Otautau-Cup Handicap, carrying nearly 540 chances more than Equerry*, with Schottische over 220 supporters away’, third. Schottische first away, but was joined by* Piton going to the back. Racing to the far turn Schottische was in command, Spearmaid moving into second place with Bilbo handy and Equerry in the rear. Schottische and Spearmaid were together turning into the straight. One hundred and fifty’ yards from home Scottische was beaten. Bilbo ranged up to the leaders and going on won cleverly by* half a length from Spearmaid, with Schottische a length and a half off third, just in front of Equerry. The winner carried his weight well and won with something in hand. Spearmaid, making her first appearance in open companyover ten furlongs, ran like a true stayer, coming out gamely when tackled by the winner. Schottische was short of w’Oik but ran well. Equerry was always well up, but failed to stay on. Battle Flag was a pronounced first selection for the Ringwav Hack Handicap, carrying nearly 510 tickets more than Strathnaver. Cupid’s Dart was one supporter off, third.. Ace of Hearts and Battle Flag were first to begin, attended by’ Fenham. The trio opened up a big gap from the field. The two leaders landed in the straight together. Drawing out, Battle Flag won easily by a length and a half from Cupid’s Dart, who finished fast and beat Fenham by a neck for second place. Ace of Hearts was close up fourth, the others were in close order. The winner is a very* smart four-year-old mare, bred by the late' J. F. Buchanan and owned by the Riverton trainer J. O. Ilymers, who purchased her at a substantial price from A. Chisholm. She was a winner as a two-year-old, but had not been seriously* trained in the following year. Cupid's Dart had a lot of ground to make tip in the straight, and ran on well. Fenham displayed marked speed, and was veryunlucky* to be cut out of second place. Ace of Hearts failed to stay on, but Strathnaver was putting in good work in the run home. For the Otautau Steeplechase Scamp was first fancy, carrying 181 tickets more, than Nyanza, with Soldier’s Dream 126 supporters off third. The field raced to the first fence of the stand double, where Scamp and Calibration fell. Going to the back Blazing Light led Nydotis and Green stone over the sod wall, Cazna and Soldier’s Dream closing up at the far

turn. Cazna lost his rider at the top of the straight. Nylotis fell at th« stand double. Blazing Light just led Soldier’s Dream, Nyanza and Maungamoe going to the back. Nyanza ran off at the sod wall, when going very well. Along the back Soldier’s Dream was showing the way to Blazing Light, Maungamoe and Greenstone. The four horses were in close order to the straight, with Soldier’s Dream still in front. In a great race home Blazing Light forged to the front and won byhalf a length from Soldier's Dream, with Maungamoe a neck off, third, just in front of Greenstone, who would probably have won had he not run off towards the birdcage gate in the last few strides. Many people thought this unruly* customer had actually won. The winner races for W. M’Carthy, better., known as the owner of Vice-Grand. Soldier’s Dream is an improving novice. Maungamoe was hardly* at his best, but the race will do him good. Nyanza was going strong when he missed the fence. Frenchman ran off in the second circuit when well back.

In the Bayswater Saddle Trot Red Abbey was first selection, earrving nearly* seventy chances more than Overture, with Chimingdale about ninety-five supporters off next in demand. Great Gun lost his chance at the start. When the field settled down Chimingdale and Overture drew away from the field. There was no change to the turn, where Overture left his opponent, jogging home. Overture scored by five lengths from Chimingdale, with Princess Thorpe. four lengths away third. Marinca was fourth. Then came Ilushabye. Tha winner is owned and trairied by W. Christie, of Gore, who is well known as a trainer-rider in the eastern district. Chimingdale is a four-year-old gelding of whom more may be heard. The back markers never looked like getting up to the leaders.

Flying Mist was first fancy for the Strathmore Hack Handicap, carrying 160 chances more than Strathnaver, \. ith Cupid’s Dart, 120 supporters off. next. Ace of Hearts at once showed out to lead Fenham and Flying Mist: across the top by* four lengths. Ace of Hearts was first into the straight. At the distance Flying Mist went after Ace of Hearts and beat her by a head. Cupid’s Dart was a length off third, just in front of Fenham and Gong. The winner is leased to the Invercargill trainer, J. A. Rowland, for whom she has been a good servant this season. She was well ridden and just caught and beat the Canterbury-bred Act of Hearts, who was prepared by J. JC. M’Murray, of Gore. Cupid’s Dart began slowly*, but finished on. There was keen investment on tha Waikouro Handicap, with Spean Bridge leading the way*, carrying nearlv 140 chances more than Sol toe, who was 25 supporters ahead of Scottische, but Some Rose and Apache were also greatly* fancied. Some Rose led to the back and headed Schottische and.

Bloom to the far turn. Racing across the top Some Rose had the field in close order, with Schottische. Spean Bridge, Apache and Soltoe threatening danger. An exciting race to the judge resulted in Apache winning by half a head from Scottische. who beat Soltoe by a neck, while Spean Bridge was a length away fourth. The winner, who had not won a race for a very lengthy period, was luxuriously treated in the weights. This also was W. T. Hazlett's first success for some time. ACCEPTANCES.
