CRICKET.

POVERTY BAY MAKES 91 IN FIRST INNINGS AGAINST AUSTRALIA. Per Press Association. GISBORNE. March 21. Only two and a half hours’ play were possible to-day in the Australia v. Poverty Bay cricket match The wicket was flooded this morning, but. despite showers, the game was continued at 2.15 p.m. The home team’s last pair continued batting brightly, carrying the total to 81, the last wicket adding 36 in fortyfive minutes. Turbutt. a high school boy, gave a chanceless display for the top score, playing fine strokes all round the wicket and batting an hour. The Poverty Bay total occupied 175 minutes. Ponsford and Woodful 1 opened for the Australians, batting very carefully and scoring mainly in singles at a steady pace. At 97, reached in 92 minutes, Ponsford was beautifully caught at mid©n for 47. Kippax livened play a little, but rain ended play. Woodfull gave a chanceless but unenterprising display. Bennett, the slow spin-bowler, was largely responsible for the slow scoring, bowling sixteen overs successively with seven maidens and having only thirteen runs scored off him. Lockett trundled well, sending down nine overs for 15 runs and a w’icket. The home side’s fielding was good. The Australians left to-night for Napier, owing to the Opotiki Road being closed to cars.
