Maddison Singles Bowling Tourney Won By J. Brackenridge.

CHAMPIONSHIP STANDARD WAS ATTAINED IN FINAL MATCH OF SERIES.

THE Maddison Trophy competition, for the single-handed championship of the Christchurch Bowling Centre, was concluded on the Christchurch green yesterday afternoon, and was won by J. Brackenridge, the representative of the Spreydon Club, who beat H. P. Buck (Imperial) in the final by 27 points to 15.

Brackenridge has competed for the trophy on fourteen or fifteen occasions, but yesterday was the first time that he was successful in winning it. He has been beaten in the semi-final on three occasions. Playing almost faultless bowls in the final, Brackenridge proved more than a match for Buck. The game was well up to championship standard and Buck put up a very creditable performance in attaining a score of 15. A fairly large crowd of spectators watched the progress of the play, and Mr H. B. Oakey, last year’s winner of the trophy, officiated as umpire. The conditions yesterday afternoon were favourably the

Third Round. Brackenridge had a very close game with Coombes, winning by a single point, after having been in the lead from the sixth head. Brackenridge won eleven heads and Coombes ten.

After opening with a three in the first head of his game against Buck, Vance failed to meet with much success and was beaten after the nineteenth head by a margin of 14 points. Buck notched a four in the ninth head. The scores in the game between Walker and Iggo were equal at 16 points after the twentieth head, but Walker secured a single in the last head. Walker won ten heads and Iggo eleven. Woolf and Besley played a very even game until the last few heads, when Woolf drew into the lead and won with five points to spare. After the twelfth head Besley was in the lead, but he won only one head during the remainder of the game. Semi-final. Brackenridge won the first three heads in his game against Walker and maintained the lead until the finish. Walker won only eight of the nineteen played, and the result was put beyond doubt when Brackenridge scored a four in the eighteenth head. Brackenridge won with a margin of 10 points. The game between Buck and Woolf was fairly evenly contested up to the sixteenth head, the board then reading: Buck 17, Woolf 15. In the seventeenth head Buck notched a three, and he followed with a three in the eighteenth and a single in the nineteenth head. The last two heads were not played. Buck winning with a margin of nine points. The Final. Brackenridge won the toss and sent down the jack for a medium length head. He just missed getting a toucher with his first bowl. Buck’s first was wide and short. The second bowls were both wide and short. Brackenridge drew the shot with his third but Buck, beat him to the jack. Brackenridge’s last went through the head. Buck scored a single. Buck sent down a good first bowl in the second head, Brackenridge’s bowl stopping short. Brackenridge got the shot with his second, but Buck took it out. Brackenridge got the shot with his last. In the third head Brackenridge drew up to the jack with his first. His second and third were also good bowls. Buck drew second shot with his third. Buck sent down the jack for a long head and drew the shot dead with a* toucher. Brackenridge with his first shifted the jack a foot but left the shot bowl. Buck was lying three when Brackenridge sent down his last bowl which went through the head. Brackenridge 14, Buck 5. Brackenridge got the shot with his third bowl in the thirteenth head, Buck failing to beat him. Brackenridge scored a single. In the fourteenth head Brackenridge got a toucher with his second, Buck just missing the jack with his second bowl. Brackenridge scored a four, Buck failing to get near the jack. Brackenridge 19, Buck 5. In the fifteenth Buck beat his opponent and scored a couple. Buck drew the shot with his third in the sixteenth and got a short trail with his last. Brackenridge with his last promoted one of Buck's bowls which was lying in front of the jack, Buck scoring a three. Brackenridge 19, Buck 10. In the seventeenth head Brackenridge got a short trail and lay the shot. Buck took out the shot bowl with his last and lay the shot. Brackenridge promoted one of his own bowls but Buck got a single after a measure. Brackenridge 19, Buck 11. In the eighteenth head Buck got the shot, with his second, but Brackenridge rested it out and lay the shot. Buck failed to dislodge the shot and Brackenridge got another counter with his last. Brackenridge 21, Buck 11. Both players sent down good bowls in the nineteenth head. Buck scoring a three. The bowls were widely scattered in the twentieth head, Brackenridge scoring a three. Brackenridge 24, Buck 14. Buck drew a good shot with his first in the twenty-first head. Brackenridge then shifted the jack a few inches but left Buck lying the shot. Buck got a single. In the twentysecond head Buck was lying two when Brackenridge got into second place. With his last Brackenridge drew the shot almost dead. Brackenridge 25, Buck 15. In the twenty-third head Brackenridge drew right on to the jack with his first. Buck failed to get on to the head. The game then ended with the scores:—*

Buck played mostly backhand shots but changed to the forehand when necessary to suit his play. PRESENTATION OF TROPHY. The trophy was presented to the winner by Mr F. J. Good, president of the Christchurch Centre, who congratulated both players on the fine performances they had put tip. He also referred to the fact that both the winner and the runner-up, although old and experienced players, had linked up with new clubs in order to help along other players.
