CHINAMAN SMILED AND DROVE HIS TRUCK OVER LEVEL CROSSING
MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE OF £2 AND COSTS. When a railway crossing keeper gave adverse signal to Percy Wong, who was approaching in a motor truck, that genial Chinaman gave a pleasant smile and drove straight on. The keeper dashed into the middle of the road, and held out his hands, but Wong smiled still more broadly, and the keeper had to “ jump for his life.” Wong was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with crossing the railway line at the Riccarton level crossing contrary to a signal from the crossing keeper. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., was on the bench. “ Defendant has only been out from China about a month, and he might have thought that the signal meant him to go on,” said Mr Stacey, who appearod for Wong. “ Or a Chinese welcome,” said Mr C. S. Thomas, who was in the court. The Magistrate smiled. “ Two pounds and costs,” was his contribution to the pleasantries.
