RAILWAY HEAD TO RETIRE.

MR H. CHAPMAN WILL LEAVE SERVICE SOON. Speaking at the opening function of the season of the Railway Social Club last evening. Mr Herbert Chapman, District Traffic Manager of Railways, announced that he was retiring and that that function would be the last he would attend in his official capacity. In announcing his retirement, Mr Chapman said that as he had been off duty for some time

owing to illness and in view of the fact that his doctor had advised him that he would not be fit to resume his duties tor some months, he had decided to retire. He had done this because he was only.twelve months oft the time when be would have to retire. His resignation had been accepted by the Raii-

way Board with the consent of the Minister of Railways. Mr Chapman has held the position of District Traffic Manager at Christchurch since 1924. For two years before that he acted as chief clerk to the District Traffic Manager. Joining the service as a cadet in Christchurch in IS9O. the whole of Mr Chapman's service has been in the South Island. He has-been stationed at Timaru, Rakaia. Lyttelton. Ashburton, Dunedin and Invercargill, where, in 1922, he was chief clerk in the District Traffic Manager’s | rice, being transferred to a similar position in Christchurch in the same year. Most of his senior service has been in the district offices.
