ASTOUNDING CHARGES MADE IN TEAPOT DOME INVESTIGATION.
NATIONAL FIGURE SAID TO BE INVOLVED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. WASHINGTON, March 20. The latest development in the oil scandal is that the Senate Public Lands Committee met to consider astounding allegations made by an unnamed witness in Chicago. Senator Nye stated that the story is to be checked up before the name of the witness is made public, for it might be unfair and disastrous to perfectly reputable persons to do so now. A clue is reported to point to a national figure, and Mr Justice Siddons is rumoured to have a part in the case, but he denies all connection with it. Senator Nye announced that the committee must investigate the sale of the Marion (Ohio) “Star” by the late President Harding, to ascertain if Continental Trading Company bonds are involved. Various Senators are demanding the removal from office of all officials who refrain from speaking of the case. Senator La Follette states that Mr H. C. Hoover, Secretary of Commerce, should reprove the action of his party, and says that President Coolidge, who is silent, was the chief beneficiary in the payment of the money, because it cleared the way for his election.—Aust. and N.Z.
