SURF LIFE SAVING COMPETITIONS ARE HELD AT SUMNER.

NORTH BEACH CLUB WINS BENSON SHIELD. The second annual life-saving day under the control of the Canterbury ‘ Surf Life Saving Association was held yesterday at Sumner, and was a most successful function. The roping off of a portion of the beach left nothing to be desired from the point of view of the spectators, while the hot tea and adequate dressing-rooms were greatly appreciated. Amongst the interested spectators were the Hon D. Buddo, M.P., Mr J. M’Ccvmbs, M.P., Messrs W. H. Nicholson (Mayor of Sumner). T. Newburgh, A. R. Blank (donor of Ray Blank Cup), W. H. Benson (donor of Benson Shield). S. F. Wilson. P. R. Climie, J. Robilliard and Captain J. L. Findlay. The officials for the three contests were:—Judges, Messrs H. S. Feast, G. Hill, F. L. Collins; referees, Messrs S. K. Bassett, C. A. Cooper, W. H. Benson; timekeepers, Messrs H. Throp, J. Ball in, T. Dalton: marshal, Mr D. V. Wilson. The calm sea was conducive to fast times, but as a surf test the competitions were not very interesting. An extraordinary feature was the manner in which swimmers other than those in the competitions would persist in disporting themselves in the competition area, and in one or two cases the line was actually fouled, fortunately not sufficiently to hinder the competitors. The results were as follow: BENSON SHIELD. (Holders: New Brighton Club.) The Junior Surf Championship of Canterbury, open to boys of affiliated clubs, under seventeen years of age. This was a resuscitation and water test similar to the Ray Blank Cup. North Beach No. 1 (G. Dew, E. Maine, A. Levett, M. M’Gillivray, C. Burnett, E. Brand, E. Brown; D. V. Wilson, instructor) 1 New Brighton No. 2 (E. Ward, F. Gallagher, E. Carpinter, D. Maher, K. Ropdell, W. Good, G. Gowan) 2 Sumner (J. Bailey, T. Turner, R. Glackin, R. Innes, T. Prosser, F. Glackin, V. Hunter; C. J. Kite, instructor) 3 North Beach No. 2 4 New Brighton No. 1 5 The winning team gave a wonderful exhibition, and owed their win largely to the excellent times of the support and the beltman.. SUMNER CUP. (Holders: New Brighton.) Four-man Surf Championship of Canterbury, consisting of water work and resuscitation. Three men of each team ballot for Individual places, beltman, linesman and reelman, the subject being previously nominated. Taylor's Mistake (C. Atkinson, D. P. Lindsay, L. J. Moorhouse, A. C. C. Robilliard subject) 1 North Beach No. 2 (W. Brough, J. Breward, R. Dawson, W. Wilson subject) 2 North Beach No. 1 (A. T. Dalton, C. R. Riordan, R. Floyd, G. Dew subject) 3 New Brighton No. 1 4 New Brighton No. 2 5 Sumner 6 The judges commented very favourably on the high standard shown in this event, and said that the winners owed their win to a fine all-round performRAY BLANK CUP. The Canterbury Senior Seven-man Surf Championship, consisting of land drill and water drill. The conditions are the same as for the Nelson Shield, the first stage being the R.L.S.S. land drill, rescue and release done by six men of each team alternately, with the Schaeffer method of resuscitation of the apparently drowned arid promotion of warmth. For the water work the teams ballot for water places and also for individual positions in the New Brighton (H. Eaglesome support, E. Owles belt, H. Smith line, M. Meikle reel, R. Wilkinson line, C. Smith line, A. Stokes subject) 1 Taylor's Mistake (J. R. Hawkes, A. S. Cookson, D. P. Lindsay, T. Climie. L. J. Moorhouse, A. C. C. Robilliard, C. Atkinson) 2 North Beach (J. Scott, C. R. Riordan, J. Breward, G. Wilson, W. Brough, A. T. Dalton, R. Floyd) 3 Sumneri '• 4 New Brighton’s win was full of merit, there being scarcely a blemish on the whole performance. The cups will be presented at a social to be held later.
