MR R. D HARMAN DEAD; EX-TENNIS CHAMPION.

News of the death of Mr Richard Dacre llarman, yesterday- afternoon, will come as a shock to his many friends in Christchurch. lie had been ailing for the past few weeks and warf confined to his bed a week ago.

The late Mr Harman was born in Christchurch, and was educated at ('hrist's College. On leaving school he was articled to Mr Armson, architect. After receiving his training he entered into partnership with Mr Collins, and took an active part in the business until quite recently. He married Miss Alice Spooner, of Napier. Mr Harman took -a very keen interest in all sports, particularly lawn tennis. He won the singles championship of New Zealand in 1891, and in partnership with Mr F. Wilding, won the doubles championship in 188788, 1890-92-94. In 1895 he annexed the title with his partner in business, Mr J. Collins. He was United Club champion in 1914. Mr Harman was a very popular figure on the tennis courts up till a few months ago. He devoted much time to coaching and was responsible for the successful careers of several of the leading players in Christchurch. The late Mr Harman took an active part in the formation of the United Tennis Club, and also in the acquisiton of Wilding Park. As a young man, he played cricket for the old United Club, and gained representative honours. Mr Hannan was also a very keen angler. He leaves a widow.
