WASHINGTON LODGE NO. 28. The fortnightly meeting of the Washington Lodge, No. 2S, was held last Monday evening. Noble Grand Brother L. Steele presiding over a fair attendance of members. Several members were reported on the sick list, and the sum of £22 6s Sd was passed for sick pay. The Standing Committee’s report was received and adopted. Two candidates were proposed for membership. Past Grands Brothers M’Cullough, Barnsley, and Rowlands were appointed judges for initiations. SPREVDOX BOWLING CLUB. The championship club singles were played during the week, with the following results: W. Milne 20, L. Sandford 18; C. Broughton 21, W. Eden 20; W. Warded 20, H. Smith 13; T. Satterthwaite 25. J. M’Lellan 15: J. Wardell 24, W. Cossar 14; J. Brackenridge 23, G. Thomas 14; C. Broughton 20, G. Thomas 12; G. Thomas 27, T. Satterthwaite 14; W. Milner 24, C. Broughton IS. In the championship doubles. W. Hayward and J. Brackenridge 20 beat V. Golding and II Hurley 10. SPREYDON BURGESSES’ ASSN. The monthly meeting of the Sprevdon Burgesses’ Association was held last Monday, in the old Boroufh Council Chambers, Mr P. Hennessy presiding over a good attendance of members. Correspondence, was received from the Post and Telegraph Department, stating that the application for a public call office at the corner of Stourbridge and Lyttelton Streets, has been referred to the Head Office. Considerable discussion took place over the proposed erection of the conveniences in Barrington Park, and it was decided that the secretary obtain a copy of the plans from the City Council, and submit same to a meeting of delegates from the Barrington Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Clubs. As the district is now retrculated \yith the high pressure water supply, it was

decided to apply to the Fire Board for additional fire alarms, and to write to the Insurance Underwriters’ Association in reference to reductions in fire premiums now coming due. The secretary was instructed to interview Mr Ring, foreman, relative to the repair of broken asphalt footpaths in different parts of the district. Mr A. T. Smith offered to give an address on hospital activities at a future meeting, which was accepted. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs E. Langford and W. Campbell for a framed picture of the four Mayors of Spreydon. It was decided to give a welcome home social to Councillor F. Cooke. PERSONAL. Mr W. J. Miles, of Conway Street. Spreydon, left for Auckland last Wednesday for an extended holiday. PERSONAL. Sympathy is extended to Mr and Mrs H. Granger, Lyttelton Street, Spreydon, on the death early this week of their son Norman. The many friends of Mrs H. Gunns, Neville Street, will be pleased to hear she has been discharged from hospital. EUCHRE PARTIES. The final of the series of euchre and dances held by the Spreydon School Committee was held on Saturday. On behalf of the committee, Mr Hall thanked all who had helped throughout the season, and mentioned the proceeds would go towards .improving the school grounds. The following were the winners: Ladies, Mrs Howdett and Miss Jones; men, Messrs Dawson and Fraser. After supper a dance was held. SOMERFIELD SCHOOL. A most successful breaking-up concert was held in the Somerfield School on Wednesday evening last. The choruses and recitations, which were alt ''veil rendered, demonstrated the careful training the children had received. while dances and other items skilfully executed by friends supplied a pleasing variety. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte solo, Edna Childs: recitative item. Standard I.; Irish reel. Misses Madge Pyke, Zoe Rattray, Dulcie Timms and Grade Smith; action song. Standard III.; song. Joyce Chambers; recitation. Standard III.; singing games. Standard II.; recitations, Nancy Smith, Doris Evans, Joyce Dobbs, Cassie Goward: sword dance, Gerald Geddes and Colin Campbell; songs. Standard IV.; pianoforte solo. John Mahoney; ventriloquism, Ernest

Hutton; violin solo, Charles Ensor; Irish Jig, Gerald Geddes and Colin Campbell; banjo, piano, violin, Misses and Charles Ensor; football recitation. Boys of Football Team: skipping dance, Madge Pyke and Zoe Rattray; folk songs, and sea chanties, Standard VI. TENNIS. The Spreydon Chib championship finals resulted:— Combined Doubles.—Miss Sunckell and Mr Freear defeated Mrs Beaufort and F. Bowes, 6-5, 5-6, 6-5. Ladies’ Doubles.—Mrs Williams and Mrs Beaufort defeated Mrs Bloor and Miss V. Bloor, 6-3, 6-4. LOYAL ADDINGTON LODGE, M.U., 1.0.0. F., No. 6455. The usual fortnightly meeting of the above lodge -was held in the lodgeroom, Dickens Street, on Monday night. The N.G. Brother T. 11. D. Nelson, presided over an attendance of about twenty members. The sick visitors’ reports were received, and payment was passed. A ballot was held for two new members, both of whom were unanimously elected. One candidate was initiated into the Order. It -was resolved that the next meeting be held on Wednesday, December 28. After the meeting a Dutch Auction was held, the proceeds going to the Christmas Tree Fund. SPREYDON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the Spreydon School Committe there were present: Mrs Brown, Mr J. Mackenzie (in the chair), Messrs W. Taylor, W. G. Smith and 11. Gunns. It was resolved to hold the school picnic on February 9, at Rangiora. It was decided that the chairman and Mr W. Taylor make arrangements for asphalting round the grounds. Correspondence was received from the Canterbury School Com mittees’ Association regarding school books, and it was decided to approve of the scheme, arrangements to lie left in the hands of Mr Voss, headmaster, and the chairman. The chairman reported that a subsidy of £27 had beer? received for swimming l>ath improvements. The visiting committee appointed for the month are Mrs Brown and Mr Hall. BARRINGTON BOWLING CLUB. In the mid-week games Barrington was beaten by Lin wood. These games have been rather disappointing. Owing to bad weather they have been postponed several times. Last Tuesday several clubs defaulted without giving any notice. Barrington defeated Imperial last Saturday in the pennant competition. During the week championship matches have been played. In the singles Fox beat Chambers and Lane, Campbell beat Lane, Chambers beat Truman, and Truman beat Walker. In the pairs. Cuff and Childs beat Campbell and Fox. SPREYDON W.C.T.U. A very pleasant afternoon wa-s spent in the Lincoln Road Baptist Schoolroom on Saturdaj’-, the occasion being the birthday of the Cradle Roll of the Spreydon W.C.T.U. There was a large attendance of members and friends. Mrs T. E. Taylor, Dominion President, was present. Mr E. E. Smith addressed the boys and girls, after which afternoon tea was served and toys and sweets distributed to the children. A collection was taken for the Willard Home Orphanage. A short programme by the young folks was much enjoined. LEAGUE SOCIAL. There was another large attendance at the weekly euchre and dance held in the Sclwyn Street Hall by the Addington League Social Club last Tuesday. The prize-winners were as follow: Euchre —Ladies, Mrs M’Allister, Misses Draper, Fitzsimmonds and J. Hamer; men, Messrs Hamer, Beattie, Ilartigan and Malcolm. Novelty dances—Lucky spot waltz. Miss Lithgow and Mr Holloway; Monte Carlo, Miss L. Hamer and Mr Irving; Tasmanian two-step, Miss L. Hamer and Mr Mills. Hams and Christmas cakes and puddings will be given for the euchre on Tuesday; also extra prizes for dancing. MOTHERS’ UNION. The final meeting this year of the St Mary’s branch of the Mothers’ Union was held last week. Mrs W. S. Bean gave an interesting address on her trip to England and the Continent. The next meeting will take the form of a picnic in the public gardens on January 17. The committee of the Mothers’ Union provided a very dainty afternoon tea. ADDINGTON BURGESSES. The social committe of the Burgesses’ Association were entertained by the president, Mr P. J. Molloy, to a social evening. The time passed most pleasantly in games and music, after which supper was served. The social committee have requested St Mary’s Vestry to reconsider the matter of euchre parties in the schoolroom. Last week’s winners at the euchre were: Mesdames Griffiths, Sheridan. Aiteheson, Cooke, and Ilartigan, and Messrs Rennie, Hobbs, Dunn, M'Guire and Philpott. SELWYN KINDERGARTEN. The Christmas party of the kindergarten was held on Wednesday afternoon, there being a very large attendance of parents and friends. The hal! was very prettily decorated for the occasion, and a very happy time was spent. The children gave a very pleasing programme. When the curtains were drawn from the platform a very heavily laden Christmas tree was revealed, and Father Christmas soon arrived to present each tiny tot with a gift. Afterwards tea was handed round and a very beautiful Christmas calce was cut. BARRINGTON TENNIS CLUB. As far as this season goes, the Barrington Tennis Club has been very successful with its competition matches, the A team having won three out of the four games it has played, while the B team has been victorious in both games it has played, all the wins having substantial margins. There are now four courts in play, and keen interest is shown in the handicap doubles tournament which is in progress. Ladder matches are being keenly contested and many changes in order have taken place. Unfortunately the secretary, Mr F. H. Johnstone, has been obliged to give up his duties, owing to ill-health. Since taking over at the loginning- of the season, he has shown much energy in furthering the interests of the club Members greatly appreciate the interest he has taken and the work he has done.
