N.Z. CRICKET PLAYER OUT OF ACTION NOW
HENDERSON RETIRES, OWING TO INJURY. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, December IG. In this season's Plunket Shield cricket matches Wellington will be without the services of one of its New Zealand representatives. M. Henderson, left-hand pace bowler, has strained a ligament in one of his legs, and, acting on advice, he is taking no further part in this season’s cricket. Henderson regrets that temporary retirement is necessary, as he was particularly keen to play the part expected of him in the season immediately following the tour to England, and he was also eager to help his club team (Y.M.C.A.) which is experiencing a very lean time. The New Zealand representative feels, however, that it is better to give up playing this season rather than run the risk of being permanently disabled. Henderson’s absence will now possibly make room for Bernau's inclusion in the Plunket Shield team, as there was little prospect previously of the Wanganui player getting a place. The absence of Wanganui and Hawke’s Bay players from the country team to meet the town representatives in a preliminary to Wellington’s Shield matches has caused considerable disappointment in Wellington, and the match does not now look like serving the real purpose for which it was intended. The country players with chances of
inclusion in the Plunket Shield team will not he playing in the Town-Country match.
Wellington’s first Plunket Shield en;agement is with Canterbury, the match o be played at Wellington commencing >n December 31. Players regarded as for the Wellington team are: J. S. Dempster, R. de R. Worker, 11. Polev, T. C. Lowrv, K. C. Tames, F. T. Badeock. A. H. Hollings, 11. M. VTGirr, E. 11. L. Bernau, and W. S. Brice, the last-named to take the cap:aincv. For the remaining place in the team H. Lambert appears to be the most likely candidate, though one or two bowlers are probably being consid;red by the selector in the hope of strengthening the attack.
The fierce light that beats uppn the lodern tennis star, especially the aung female of the species, respects no rivacy. The other day Joan Fry, one
the ‘numerous flapper champion' ith whom England hopes to regain s tennis prestige, became engaged. :nce then the cables have been run ng hot with syndicated stories about le male party to the contract (says a y r dney writer). They have left unirned no item of his career, from his tanner of earning a living to his taste n socks.
