WOOL SALES.
(Special to the “Star.”) TIMARU, December 15. The first wool sale of the season for South Canterbury opened here to-night, before the largest bench of buyers which has ever attended a Timaru wool sale. Bradford, America, Japan, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Australia, France and Germany and also New Zealand mills were all represented, the buyers totalling 80. Bidding throughout was keen. There were no complaints of any kind, and 98 per cent of the total offering was disposed of. It was remarked more than once at the sale that sellers were satisfied, for the first time on record. In many cases the prices obtained were in excess of brokers’ valuations, and were in advance of those obtained at the first sale of last season. The best price of the sale was 252 d obtained for a choice lot of “Portobello” merino. Practically no Corriedale wool was forward. The sale was quite equal to that recently held in Christchurch, though it is generally considered the finer wools in North Canterbury are a little superior to those grown in South Canterbury. Prices for fine crossbreds were better than those obtained at the Christchurch sale. Generally speaking South Canterbury-grown crossbred wool is slightly superior to North Canterbury cross-bred. The order of sale and the offerings by each firm, were as follows: Bales. Pyne, Gould, Guinness 2211 National Mortgage 2859 Dalget.y and Co 2308 New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co 528 C.F.C.A 1911 Total 9847 RANGE OF PRICES. t The range of prices was as follo'VS; —
