AVENGER STANDS TRIAL FOR PARIS MURDER.

The trial of Samuel Schwarzbar on the charge of murdering General Petlura has been opened. One hundred and forty-nine yitnesses have been cited, including Professor Einstein, the sicentist, and Maxim Gorky, the Russian author. Russian, German, Polish, Ukranian and Yiddish interpreters will present a deal of polyglot evidence. It was mentioned that Schwarzbard won the Croix de Guerre when fighting in the French Foreign Legion during the world war. His conduct in Paris after the war was beyond reproach. Replying to the Judge’s questions the prisoner said that Petlura was rightly killed as he ordered the Jewish pogroms. General Petlura, a Russian who commanded the Ukrainians in the war, and was ec^tor of a Russian newspaper “The Trident.” was shot dead on the Boulevarde St Mithel, by a Russian who e fidrsix shots, five of which were effective. The assassin, who was arrested, proved to be a Russian Jew named Samuel Schwartzbar, who alleged that Petlura oppressed the Ukrainian Jews during the anti-revolutionary regime. Schwartzbar declared he determined to exact vengeance.
